"You can't pick 'em can you?" The danger of Valet parking

I have never used Valet parking and probably never will.

On the other hand, the article said a lot about Ferrari owners.

On the other hand, the security guard was completely wrong....you can in fact pick 'em cause a guy in trackies and flannel can't afford a Ferrari

I drove a Ferrari 328GTS (owned by a family member) from Canberra to Sydney in bare feet, track pants and a polar fleece. Looked great at the Mobil at Goulburn! hahaha

Not so true..

Back in 1999 when we had a top end mens wear store in Sydney located on Burwood Rd Burwood.
Opened up the front doors of the store on a Saturday morning and virtually had a unshaven, scruffy looking chap fall into the store in tracky's drinking a beer rapped in brown paper back.

The guy was fairly tanked up and spent over $2500 cash on a Zegna suit and paid in full.. Left the suit with us for alterations and promised to be back by close of business 4pm to pick up the suit.

We had a laugh, and I mentioned to to my brother that there was no way that he would even remember where the store was later on to pick up his purchase.

At 3.30pm this yellow Ferrari 360 Modena double parks outside our store and this well spoken clean shaven guy jumps out and explains that he was in the store earlier and was here to pick up his suit..As you can imagine we where all blown away as no one even recognised him as the scruffy chap from this morning.

Apparently he was some sort of property developer who was working on an all night deadline on a project and came straight to our store from work and was having his morning breakky ale..

Not that I drive a ferrari, but I am scruffy and unshaven all the time.

There's once someone scruffy came in and asked for some cold and flu tablets for his wife a while ago and I immediately assume he's a runner. Anyway, after a bit of a drill and got his ID - quick glance at the license and I noticed a familiar last name. He's the husband of a very regular customer who buy all her gifts from our store (like weekly). I quickly trying to mend things on asking how's business etc etc. He doesn't drive a ferrari, but he does have a 7 series.

There's also a regular customer of mine always come in his shorts and singlets (unless he's just finished work) and sometimes scruffy (need to be political here ). He's a surgeon and drives a Murcielago.

You can't really tell from their looks.

I'm pretty sure you can pick them if they have no valet ticket and present the wrong ID. Fail. Also, if it can be correctly believed that the guy in fact did present his licence, then he just stole the car after leaving all his personal details behind. Double fail.

The guy should cop a punishment and the owner should sue Crown for breach of bailment contract. The employee obviously screwed up bigtime.

You definitely can't tell from appearance all the time. You can get it right most of the time, but you should never assume!

Understand what everyone is saying, but in this instance, you are leaving a Casino, don't have a valet ticket, probably don't have items in your wallet indicating some wealth and finally you aren't dressed in a manner one would expect. Surely alarm bells were ringing, just as you have all indicated in your examples. But alas no, despite the warning signs, the guard assumed he couldn't pick them.....he was wrong, as he did in fact pick it by his comment, but he let the dreamy illusion of an ordinary guy being able to afford a Ferrari get in the way of someone stealing a car. A few polite but firm questions could have adverted what will probably end up with a bunch of Crown employees losing jobs or being put on janitor duties for awhile.
