2011 BMW M1 vs 2011 Mustang GT
Here's an interesting comparison to make on paper at this point.
My guess is they will both accelerate and perform similarly on a track. Sure the BMW is going to be the more refined car, but give your thoughts on the performance aspects of these two cars. I'm guessing both will do high 12's in 1/4 traps of 110-111 for M1 traps of 112+ for MGT And based on Car and Driver's Lightening Lap times of current and previous 135i/335i and Mustang GT's, I'd say they'll both lap the VIR in the 3:06:0-3:07:0 range. The Ford will probably be $15k cheaper to start My guess is a base MSRP of $32-33k for the MGT and $46-48k for the M1 Would any of you consider a $38k (nicely optioned) Mustang GT over a $52k (nicely optioned) M1? Thoughts on the two cars and how they might compare performance wise? |

I think it's a little too early to speculate, considering we don't have solid test data on either car. The Mustang is going to offer serious bank for the buck though.
BTW, they annouced the pricing for it already. And some new interior shots: (I'm a big fan of brown leather interiors BTW, and I'm loving this one) |

Ive always been a fan of stangs. I just hope that they stiffened the vert chassis a bit, thats the reason that I didnt buy a stang vert, aweful cowl shake.
But coupe for coupe, its a tough descision, especially with the 302 and 6 speed being optional. |

It would be a pretty close overall, althought the M1 will be more refined and tighter in the twisties, with the track pack the Stang wont be far behind, and will have a fair ammount more jam...especially as of the 2011 MY, because Ford is reinstalling the 5.0L and its gonna have over 400 Hp, and almost 400Tq.
I like the new Mustang alot, but dunno, the Bimmer is still a Bimmer...just have to wait and see what ends up being done for the M1.(high hopes)

I would think the BMW would be more direct, unsettled and simply out handle the Mustang. The New M1 will weight about 400lbs lighter, haver a much lower center of gravity, wider track, wider tires and more low end torque as well..!
Actual spec don't mean anything, it how they are applied to the ground is what counts. BMW wins in every way. |

Please post specs of M1 here, since you seem to be in the know..
- I doubt M1 will have wider tires than Mustand - I doubt 345hp car will have nmore torque than 390 lb/ft of Mustang 5.0 v8. - Please explain how M1 will be 400lb lighter than Mustang, which is already 400lb lighter than 4k camaro. Quote:

Dude the stang GT can't hold its own against a 135... and you are comparing it to the upcoming M1 ??? Not even in the same league...
400 Hp is useless since the Stang cannot put them to the tarmac for shit I would rather have an M1 over any Stang even the ones that come with 700 Hp whatever they are called these days |

Oh and Jeremy, thanks for the Stang price list, I was unaware it was out already.
And my $32-33k guess was for the GT Premium, based on the fact the 2010 GT premium starts around $30-31k. Based on that, looks like I nailed the price increase. |

0-60 mph - 4.9 seconds 1/4 Mile -13.5@104.2 mph Lateral Acceleration - 0.95 g Figure-8 course -25.5 g @0.70 g It puts it down quite nicely. What about the 30,4xx keeping up with an E9X M3 around a track? That should never happen. You're looking at a $20,000 difference. The fact is that a stock 135i is not on the level of the new 2011 Ford Mustang GT performance wise. Where we all would probably agree is refinement, balance, luxury, yada yada yada. But for the purposes of this objective comparison, the numbers dont lie. I await the roadtests. Ford obviously realized that they are at war. |

I think if you are looking for a purely performance car at a VERY reasonable price (and don't care for BMW...or even VW, levels of luxury, refinement (except the new 5.0 is said to be super stout and refined), then I think the 2011 Mustang GT is going to be a huge sales success. I mean really, with the Track Pack and Brembo brakes, it will out run the GT500 around a track and be not far off of the M3 (though you'll probably have to work harder driving the MGT). Ford is going to clean up with the new GT. Now if only they'd make one with an IRS |

You guys should compare the new 135i to the GT. The new 135i will have DCT which is about 0.2 faster than steptronic. I got to use it in the new Z4, just brilliant.

Please read the "The Boss" and other tell-tales from BMW? BMW has suggested several times, that they want to reduce the M1 weight by 60kg ~ 90kg from the current 135i. Which is roughly around 1400kg... (doesn't sound too hard to do) We know that the 2011 Mustang is 19lbs heavier than the 2010.. Then you use something called mathematics and subtract the two.. which results in around 400lbs difference. Who cares about the Camaro? Secondly, we know what the current tires are on both cars, and we KNOW the new M1 will be have substantially wider wheel wells, to shoe-horn wider tires on the car, on a wider track.. making it wider than the 135 and the Mustang. Lastly, I didn't say more torque, I said more "low-end torque".. if you'd bother to understand each car's powerband, you'll see a significant difference between a NA 5.0 motor and a 3.0 bi-turbo.. and understand what those deltas do for performance. Peak doesn't matter as much, usable does. |

Your rambling has become downright comical. The ONLY time you use low end torque is when you're launching in first gear, and even then it's not a huge factor because you're not doing it from idle. If you're running the car hard you'll never be below 3k RPM (unless you don't know what you're doing and select the wrong gear), and it's not like a 5.0L V8 has EVER been lacking on low end torque anyway. Power in the upper RPM band has MUCH more influence than having peak torque at 1500RPMs and then having it fall off where you spend most of your time while you're racing. The 135i is over 3400lbs. It's already been stated that the M1 will be 3300-3400lbs, and the Mustang weighs a little over 3500lbs. It's funny that someone with the username "Numbers" doesn't seem to be able to operate them. That would be a difference of 250lbs AT MOST. You're pulling that 1400kg number straight out of your ass, and you don't even know how much a 135i weighs to start with ! Just give it a rest. It's painfully obvious that you're not capable of offering an informed, unbiased opinion on the matter, and your posts border on outright lies. |

even if the m1 could keep up with the new GT, the price alone would make it unreasonable to compare...
