Thumbs down DONT buy a JB4 or from burgertuning

A few weeks ago I decided to take my car to the next level. A stock 2013 BMW 135is N55 with a DCT.

The notion was that Burger Tuning had quality products with a good reputation and quality customer service. I ended up spending just over $2,000 with them, purchasing a Pheonix Racing stepped intercooler, Pheonix Racing charge piping, JB4, JB4 Bluetooth Connect, BMS Intake, and their BMS Meth Kit. Oh and the App for an additional $27.99.

After installing all of Burger Tuning's parts with exception to the Methanol Kit and the Bavarian Auto sport Catless Downpipe , the JB4 gave me issues. Initially the work was performed by One Nine Motorworks with no issues on the first start-up. This quickly changed, the JB4 threw a series of codes all pertaining to DME related issues. Misfires, Fuel pressure Issues, and Knocking.

The car was then taken to RKTunes for diagnosis where they checked, re-checked, and re-checked again (3 times) the JB4 Installation. Checking the installation was advised by Terry at Burger Tuning, but the car would still enter limp mode right off the bat under any acceleration. The list of different codes each time had RKtunes joking that I had an N54 in the form of an N55.

RKTunes then removed the JB4 and reconnected the factory plugs with no issues what so ever. The car drove fine with no tune even with the performance parts installed. I made the choice to do an ecu flash to salvage the time spent at RKTunes and get rid of all the frustration this process created.

In effort to resolve the problems, Burger Tuning simply directed me to n54tech forums as customer service and stated my data logs showed nothing. They would not accommodate any returns even though the methanol kit was not unpackaged and comforted my issues by stating
"There are thousands of people out there with JB4 on stock turbo engines or upgraded turbo engines pushing 400-650 wheel hp on their N55's.
JB4 is not a cause of any issue unless it's faulty which we will replace or repair if needed. This case is very rare."

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AT BURGER TUNING.

I think most people have a positive experience with BMS. As for tuning, I would get a Dinan S2. Not customizable, but reliable.

I had severe issues with the JB4 as well. Like you, had the installation checked over multiple times, and still gave me issues like misfires and stalls at idle.

Took it out, and its been fine ever since.

If I had to tune again, Id probably go MHD

Must be everyone but me...
I ended up having RKTunes flash my ECU and use a tablet to switch between the tune I prefer.

I had a jb4 and I never liked the power delivery (I don't think JB4+DCT works very well.... really laggy). I went to Dinan and have been happy ever since.

I'm sure most people have good success with it and it works great. I do believe however that *some* people, and I don't know the percent, don't have very high standards or understanding of things and wouldn't notice an issue.

Reads very differently than my experiences with BMS over the years. Sorry you did not have a good experience with their products and service. Assuming you purchased everything new, did they not want to swap your JB4 unit to rule out a bad box or harness? It's all very strange.

A customer emailed me asking about this thread since negative BMS reviews are so uncommon so I followed up with BMS to see what the story was for posterity.

They remembered your situation with RK Tunes and said that you contacted them indicating you were having issues with a new JB4 install. They asked for photos and a JB4 log to better isolate the problem but you were not able to provide either. They acknowledged something was wrong based on the fuel pressure fault code, likely a faulty JB4 board or harness, but said you had no interest in working with them to diagnose or exchange the part and only contacted them after the fact. So they allowed you to return the JB4 and WMI kit even though it was months beyond the return period.

They added when they received the JB4 back they confirmed a wire had come loose on the fuel pressure connection causing all the issues and they thought it was unfortunate they were not able to do any diagnoses in real time as it could have been easily resolved. They thought it was strange RK Tunes didn't spot the JB4 harness issue as they are an experienced shop. They also added they offered to let you return the WMI kit but you never sent it back.

These sorts of situations are rare but and clearly you had a really frustrating time but I can't help but wonder if the shop you choose just wanted to sell you their flash so didn't do the JB4 diagnostics properly. Most people who do JB4 self install and BMS has some of the best support in the industry so it's unfortunate this situation didn't work out for you as planned.

Either way if you ever need a fuel pump upgrade down the road Fuel-IT is here for you.
