I don't find stock shifter to be too rubbery, but an SSK is on my list. Try driving an F30 manual (if you can find one), my brother has one and THAT is RUBBERY. So hollow feeling, made mine feel like a Cobra shifter.

I had the Redline D4 put in. Definitely positive results. 1 - 2 shift feels much better (that shift took a lot of effort before). Other gears feel smoother too.

I thought my gearbox had been abused by the previous owner, but it appears that everyone has a tough 1 - 2 shift. Of course my SSK doesn't help. The D4 is the best I've found to help with that. Every other oil I tried made it even stiffer.

I got my car with 11k miles originally and always was a tough shift. Feels better than it ever did with this redline and I’m at 85k now

Still learning about the 128i, but coming from E36s, it was possible to refresh the shifter without dropping the driveshaft, is that still the case?

Realoem diagram: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=25_0388

In that link, replacing 2 (with aftermarket poly), 6 (shift lever ball wears down), 7 (cup bushing), and 13 (small sponge that degrades over time) makes a huge difference in more positive shifts.

AKG DSSR was an awesome upgrade in my E36, I highly recommend one. It can be a bit tedious to install because you have to file down the plastic on the shift lever and rod joint to get a very snug fit between the DSSR and those components but it adds another level of solid to the shifter.

#6 and #7 are a simple 5 minute swap. I don't think you can change #2 without dropping the transmission.

I don't believe that's the case? I had my mechanic swap out the #2 oval bushings for AKG delrin parts and they didn't need to drop the transmission....total labour to rebuild the entire shifter including parts 2,3,4,5,7,9,10,11,12,13 was about 2 hours....

Do 3 and 4 still continue their reputation for being a total PITA to remove? One was bad enough on the E36, but more is better right?

I stand corrected. Hell if that's the case, I think I'll swap mine out!

Not sure what numbers they are on the diagram but I was able to use every piece of this kit no problem, I dropped the exhaust and driveshaft though.

And yeah my 1-2 is tough but I've gotten really used to it

I’m curious as to how you replaced the rear shifter carrier bushing. I bought the Turner bushing with intent to swap it today but the bracket was not removable although some DIYs show that it is. I was worried about trying to pry the bushing out for fear of not being able to get the Turner bushing in.

Otherwise, I was able to install the ECS front carrier bushings and the e46 transmission mounts. I have the Dinan ssk and am really happy with the improvements these bushings made.

#5 on this diagram?

I honestly just followed the first DIY I found and I think it was this one for an E46 but everything was almost identical.

Could you take some well-lit pictures for us? I remember this job being tricky with things wanting to come out and go in 1 specific way but otherwise straight forward with that DIY..

** by the way, would recommend buying the shift rod seal that goes into the trans. Mine's weeping and the shifter rebuild would've been a great time to do it. Oh well

Yes, #5 in the diagram is it, and I had not seen that linked DIY before - that is basically exactly what I am working with and will need to do. Thanks for sharing that! I'll take another shot at it this weekend.

And I noticed my shift rod seal was weepy too. Another project for down the road.
