If you are happy with the car I wouldn't worry about it. It seems to be that your fuel pump is as easily replaced as my n52 but your fuel regulator would not be. But these parts do not fail very often. I would not let the car get terribly low on gas - to avoid overheating the pump - and not worry about it. If you do not intend to mod your car you probably will see essentially no difference.

Since it appears you live in California, you should be covered. Sadly the SULEV warranty isn't valid in all states. I live in Arizona and already had to pay for one of my repairs that would have been covered if I lived in an SULEV state, or if my car was a different year. There is a document attached to the original post that shows the model year along with the state to determine if you are covered.

I read In a different forum that BMW will honor the warrantee in all states as part of federal fuel economy and emissions regulations. But in states other than Cali you have to request it and possibly demand it since the state doesn't enforce it. I haven't needed to verify this yet, thankfully.

Many states follow SULEV requirements.

I recommend just swapping in non-SULEV parts if you have an emissions part failure. The fuel pump is separate on the N51 at least unlike the E46. The E46 with M56 could have a non-SULEV tank and pump swapped in for significantly less than a SULEV replacement.

Has anyone tried swapping in a N52 pump and/or tank? Sadly I doubt just a pump is that simple..

Not sure if linking to a Youtube video is allowed, but ran across this video the other day. He takes apart a bad SULEV fuel tank and it's really interesting what's inside. I would like to see an N52's internals for comparison.
