Will swapping the underseat woofers to HK ones along with the Alpine Kit a good mix?

I was planning to go this route.

I have 8" Earthquake subs under the seats, IMO get a custom boot sub.

Costs less to fit and will sound 1000x better.

Edit: I should note that the sub output from the headunit goes into an aftermarket Alpine amp and the amp powers the subs.

Also, 8" speakers can make amazing (better than 6.5"'s even) midwoofers, in a 3 way (more excursion and cone area with decent response still lol.. Better/more power handling with bigger drivers for more volume in a lower frequency )

If you have the luxury of going a 4-way front stage.. 12"-8-6.5-4-1 has such a better setup

Also, another important thing i forgot to mention before, subbass is not directional, a proper sub setup you can't tell where the sound is coming from, however, midbass is directional, having the speaker under seat is non optimal, as you can tell where it comes from unless you put some maaajor tuning effort with a processor.

Ed: 8" underseats don't cost more to fit, way less in fact than a sub, the unerseat cavity has a proper enclosure (albeit smallish) and 8" fit in without modification

Oh, so our hunits DO have sub outs, or do you also have an aftermarket setup?

I find it a good mix as it keeps the OEM-ness (I hate hectic boot subs). I got the HK subs for free so I'm not complaining.

I plan to get the Alpine Upgrade done when I take my car (E82 MY11, build date 09/10) in for a service next month (standard "professional" HU). It seems pretty clear from this thread that I need to ask specifically for HU to be recoded to "hifi"..? For folk around Brisbane, just wondering where abouts you had the work done? I was planning on taking it to Brisbane BMW - but am open to other suggestions if people have had better experiences elsewhere...?

Thanks

did you buy the upgrade from OS or are you buying it locally? just curious as im looking at doing the same over the next few months.
as far as workshops go, Westside BMW seem pretty good. ive only been there a few times, but they seem to know what there on about.

I bought mine from scheidmann, took a long time to arrive (1 month or so) but otherwise ok.

I installed it at Brisbane BMW and it was a nightmare, had to go back 3 times because speaker wire came loose and then they scratched up my car. All fixed up in the end eventually.

You shouldn't need to tell them about the coding, it's in their installation instructions.

For a standard Pro head unit on a my11 car, it definitely "should" be recoded. Dont be surprised if the dealer tells you otherwise. Itll still work not coded, but certianly not reach its full potential. The outputs and EQ are all screwed up without coding.

Got mine from scheidmann, installed & coded myself (you must code it) - it's all plug & play, just get some trim removal tools to remove door cards & sill trim panels. do it in a Saturday morning with ease.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Resistor - haven't bought the gear yet. Was thinking that I'd have the workshop order it in, but the posts I've read on ordering it on-line are quite tempting...

I checked all the suggested sites, and seems that only Schiedmann has it listed - but currently out of stock. I've shot a few emails off to the local dealerships to see what they're charging.

Out of stock isn't an issue with Schmiedmann, that's the case with everything I've brought from them. Their communication is good & they get it direct from BMW in a week, another week to get here with tracking all the way. Freight is much cheaper from them than from the US & comes via FEDEX to Brisbane, irrespective of their website saying DHL.

They can get any BMW part, just get the part number you want & put it in the search field on their site for pricing.

Interesting...
I just got the following back from each of the dealerships I contacted:
- The first quoted $1818. No mention of previous experience doing the job or coding the head unit;
- The next quoted $1620. They said they've done the work before - but NO coding was required;
- The last quoted $1440. They said they've done the work many times before and are familiar with the coding. ...DING DING, we have a winner!

cool did you ask how much the parts only are? be interesting to see how labor is included in that.
which dealer gave the best price if you don't mind me asking?

The most expensive quote gave a price of $613 for labour. The other two didn't itemise the quote.

...I'll PM you with the details (now that my post count has hit ...FIVE! and am now allowed to do so).

I just ordered the alpine kit from Schmiedmann What's the best quote anyone's got in Brisbane for installation? I think Westside BMW's done a few before, I didn't get an official quote but it sounded like it would be around the $400-450 mark.

It would if had it done at bmw, cause their hourly rate is an arm and a leg. Its not a quick install. Alot of trim and rear seat has to come out + coding time (which shouldnt take long).

DIY aint too bad on this if you can code or get someone to code it.

Westside BMW quoted $400 and Brisbane BMW matched it.

Hmm I just realised the kit I ordered is part number 65-41-0-445-684 but there is a later kit which I can't find on Schmiedmann, 65 41 2 163 268. My 135i is MY09. Have I ordered the right one?.
