dropping subframe was actually pretty easy. We used C clamps to clamp the brake lines. dont forget to unclip the lines attached to the subframe on each side. remove spring nuts on the exhaust/mid pipe. unscrew the hanger from the axleback exhaust, easy after removing diffuser. There is a rear cross brace you must remove totally which is in the shape of a V (youll see it). There is a steel piece which connects the front rear subframe bushings to the frame on the side which you must remove totally. put a jack underneath the diff housing and bring her down. now we must find a easy way to get the busings in and out.

In my experience with other cars, I would tend to agree.
But, seems in practice the guys who have done this are reporting positive results, which is interesting cause it doesn't sound like it should work.

If anything, I would go with a stiffer rear sway, and then a slightly stiffer front. The current M3 sway sounds like it's too much.

As far as this suspension, the feeling I get is that the dampers are over-damped, especially on rebound, given the soft-ish springs.
Once the bump is taken the rebound circuit feels overly aggressive.
It's a classic problem with an undersprung setup. It happens way too often in OEM motorcycle setups.
I'm frankly really surprised that BMW missed this one, as they are so darn good at suspension tuning.
My 135i is at the dealer getting a problem fixed, and they gave me a 328xi for a loaner. It's amazing how much more comfortable yet controlled the non-sport Xi suspension is. It makes my 135i's "sport" suspension feel crude in comparison, and that's a real let down for sporty BMW. Even initial turn in feels crisper and more responsive in the 328xi.

When I was deciding between the 1 and the 3, this was the one big area that I compromised on when deciding to get the 1. I thought it wouldn't be as bad as it felt on the test drives. Driving it for the past 10 months has shown the BMW really missed on this one.
I hope they took the opportunity to better tune the 135i suspension since they released the N55 engine. But, no one has been able to answer my question about that. It's probably because BMW didn't bother fixing anything.

My 135i is a lease so I'm not going to start tuning the suspension.
I really do hope that the next 1, hopefully in 2 years when I'm back in the market, will have a truly BMW worthy sport suspension.

Sway bars are a fine tuning element in suspension. If the basic major suspension bits are not good to begin with, fiddling with sway bars is like trying to "polish a turd". If I were keeping my 1, I would go with new springs and dampers FIRST, then decide on sway bars if needed.

two points on sways also.
who forgot to mention the 28 mm bar has a kink in it??????? its probly the same stiffness as the regular 26.5 bar. bmw is really weird.
on a 1er with a oem sway up front we were simulating slaloms and this car was scrubbin up front with 255 star specs and 3 degrees camber. There is only one reason bmw did not put the 26.5 mm bar in this car..........M3

I really don't get that.
The 1 and the M3 are not competition for each in the market what so ever.
The 3 series is the base for the M3, and it's sport suspension is better sorted, and I don't think it takes anything away from the M3, especially sales, if that is what you are alluding too. The 1 series is even further removed from any competition for the M3.

Its been a while since I installed my bar, but unless I am absolutely crazy, there was no kink (28mm bar). I'll have to search if I have any uninstalled pics to look for it...but I am almost certain that there was no kink.

I'm interested to hear how the subframe bushings are, because I would like to do them if it weren't such an involved installation. I also like the rear M3 links, maybe that will be next. I am going to keep polishing...who knows what might come out!

E93 sway below, slight narrowing in the middle.
I have just done this sway, eibach pro-kit,and 225x40-18/255x35-18 dunlop z1 tyres, only drove it this weekend like this for the first time, drove hard through round-abouts and corners i know and was very happy with the directness and the car felt very planted, even my wife noticed when she drove it(she was not keen on these mods, its a bmw you know )and said it felt smooth also.

I think these mods go along way to making this car handle like it should.

Yeah looks like the E93 front sway is 28mm only near the bushing joints, and probably 26.5mm everywhere else. So slightly stiffer, and the less rubber in the bushing probably makes it a little bit more stiffer too.

I couldnt think of any other reason to make the worse by putting a less than optimal front sway on the car. thats all

That is the case. I was confused by this when I received mine and had to call up Harold at HPA to ensure that I actually had the correct bar, but yes, it is only 28 out near the bushings...

that makes sense. but why bother having to create new bushings for 1.5 mm when it doesnt even span the entire bar. the length of the kink appears to be different from the M3 vert to the 135i bar. There must be some sort of correlation between the diameter of kink/length of kink and stiffness, although i cannot find any info on it.
