Hi,

I am leasing the 2011 128i Convertible. Is it worth getting this pkg from BMW? It is costing $40 per month.

I'm always a big fan of the tire/wheel package. I've already had 4 tires replaced under my plan. The 18" tires that came on my 135i aren't cheap either, so it definitely has paid itself off though. See what the costs are for the tires that come on your 128i & go from there. And the "wheel" warranty is normally covered only if the wheel is cracked or leaks air; at least thats what most of the warranty companies cover. They wouldn't cover it if it is just bent. The $1295 sounds a bit high to me. You should be able to bargain with them on the price. There's ALOT of markup on the aftersales packages that they offer in the end.

Tire Rack lists the Michelin Primacy HP ZP or the Bridgestone Turanza EL 42 RFT as standard on the 128i 'vert w/o SP.

I have the EL42s on my 328i wagon and they are much improved over the originals. And in 13 years of driving various BMWs with 17" wheels (on some of the nation's worst roads), I've never had to replace either a wheel or tire due to damage.

Since you are getting 16" wheels, I wouldn't spend the money on the tire/wheel insurance - unless you routinely drive into potholes at high speed.

This helps me a lot. I singned the insurance as the post sale before picking up my vehicle. It happend so quickly before I had a second thought.

I will be cancelling those before I pickup my car. the cost of 4 tires only comes less than 1000 as I do not see I would be ending up in that worst case situation.

I just picked up my 135i and got the tire and wheel package. It for 60 months and I think it was $1376. A rim alone on that is $500 then another $250 for the tire. Plus if you get a nail or anything happens premature to that tire you get a new one!

I just had three tires replaced under my warranty. The cost billed to the insurance was $1300, I don't know where you got the $1000 figure for 4. The tires already had 25k on them, no prorating so it was a good deal. I got a nail in one of the new ones two days later and it was replaced again. It was a rear tire, billed another $350 to insurance. I initially got the warranty because the rims are so expensive. I can't remember what I paid.

I was looking at the tire price only which is close to $200 each. I didn't take into account of mounting and wheel costs. I never had a situation to replace my wheels in the past. So was trying to take a chance. If you run into issue with one tire, I am sure the insurance will not cover the other pair which you might want to change to keep them in line.

So still thinking... I will be picking up my car this evening. But still not sure if the 1300 is worth ir or not.. as I never ran into this situation on my x3 which I am driving for 6 years.

It did seem dumb to replace 3 tires and leave one with 25k. My SA said it's no big deal and I'm turning the car in next August anyway. The problem with run-flats is that most say they are not repairable. One nail and done.
If I had to do it again, would take the money I'd spend on the insurance and buy non run-flats, keep the run flats to turn the car in with.

It's all based on the big "IF" anything happens. Look at it this way... if, by some chance, you do need a new tire or two during that time frame and didn't have the insurance you would be paying a tire shop maybe $350 per incident (if you're going to the dealer for a flat tire you deserve to be ripped off). That puts you at $700 for your very own insurance policy that you can not possibly lose money on. As you said yourself, it hasn't happened before so why would you take the "offer" now?

If you do pop a tire or two and are happy that you got the tire insurance you should probably enroll in some sort of basic arithmetic class. These plans are almost never worth it.

So the point is I don't have to pay $40 per month or 1295 over 3 years. , and take the risk. The rim costs much more than the tire. I hope I wouldn't get my rim bent

Anyway.. two hours to go, before I pickup my car. I will see what my instinct says and listen to it with all the information from this forum.

you're much less likely to bend a 17" wheel. I would skip it.

In the classifieds on this website people routinely offer barely used or new car takeoff complete wheel and tire packages for between $650 and $1000. So one could have an entire set in reserve for a lot less than the insurance costs. And if you never need to replace a tire from damage you've got your next set of tires when the first set wears out.

I would skip all wheel insurance and extended warranty plans since in most cases, you will not fully use it. It is better off to pay as you go. Also, you may decide to swap the RFT with larger regular performance tire.

I would skip it in your case. You REALLY gotta hit something hard to blow out 16s! Tire/wheel warranty is good for those with 18" wheels. 16" tires costs substantially less than 18s as well. IMO not worth it in your case!

Mine was only $750 for 3 years and I have had 4 tires replaced so it has paid for it self twice over.

1200 is equal to (4 tires) or (2 wheels and 1tire).. so you do the math..

it depends on where you live.. for example here in South FL we have a lot of pot holes after rainy season so i know i will do the four tires for sure within the policy time.

I am happy the 8 week wait is over. I just picked up my car. Amazing. I didn't buy the wheel pkg though. Worth a risk. What's life without risk.

Most likely you will want to switch to non runflat tires in the future anyway and then your wheel package would have been useless, so good call not getting it.
