the wholesale market for 1'r RWD in mid-west this time of year is awful. The $7000 acv is the correct amount or close to it, carmax would possibly give a bit more as they'll ship it to a southern state. Your Dealer has a M3 they may not see many and don't need to discount much. Tell them what it takes to do the deal without waiting until spring when the market for your car is much better. Threaten to drive to Chicago where the selection and trade diff is better. Every Sales Mgr in the country decides whether to do a deal or not, the pain of losing money or risking money vs losing your deal, amplifies when it's the competitor across town. Many of these boxes you don't have leverage to check but for an M3 the dealer does.
The only way 11' 64k mile would go for $18k+ is if it's cpo and BMW backing it's repairs. looking what's on websites from a dealer with ease of buying because they have a slick talking schmuck like me, trade acv with instant gratification, credit like I'm the banker, ext. warranties- I'm the dealer and DMV inhouse all done in house once you say I'll take it 25-90mins. It is worth posting and paying for listing on Cars./Autotrader./Truecar./Carguru. free even craigslist. Private seller on those sites brings an advantage. Someone is looking for this spec and color combo. You will have answered a prayer for this person offering the magical used car factory for them for what seemed impossible. You can double your money getting $12-17k with patience and making your automobile life frustrating for a bit. These sites have asking price and not what they will get negotiated to. In researching the postings I came across a 09' 20k miles $20k from a private seller in KY. if you can remove the love for your 1er and objectivly compare how much would you pay for that one on an offer? and 09MY how much value is that sexy odom? |

Mostly you are right. however, there are often tax benefits to a trade-in that offset some of the lower offers for trade-ins.

I bought mine for $13.5k. 09 with 60k miles.
Yours is face lift N55. If you have a stick even more value. I'd guess $13.5 atleast leaning towards $19k. But I also wouldn't be too mad at the dealer. They have to make money somehow. Sell privately or accept $60% of the private sale value. Business is business. The manual, despite what others say, does increase the value. I wanted a manual and eventually settled for the autotragic to save a few thousand. I just bought mine last May so I'm speaking as someone searching for a used 135i. There will be a BMW CCA guy hunting for a manual version of this car. I also happen to know FOR A FACT the dealer I bought it from paid $11.5k for a bad example of the car. This is the 09 N54 6 auto in a major accident. I'd recommend at least asking that for yours because the I saw the database on all the recent 135i transactions (pays to be friendly with the bmw dealer) when I bought mine from local used car lot. They were not being traded in for less than $10k. This is a fact As of may 2017. I doubt your curve nose dived in 1.5 years. |

To an enthusiast, the manual is worth more. To a non-enthusiast (the majority), the automatic is worth more. Dealers cater to the majority.

DCT, Automatic ... what's the difference?
Manual isn't worth more, it's just more desirable. If you know you want the manual, you also know not to overpay for the car. That's not the perfect customer. The perfect customer is a daddy buying her daughters first car - he want's a small, automatic BMW and isn't going to negotiate hard on price. |

These days a lot of car enthusiasts (including fathers buying for their daughters, lol) buy autos and DCTs. Sometimes it just makes more sense. You can shift faster than a manual, or if you're stuck in rush hour traffic, you can put it in auto mode if you want and let it do the shifting for you. Win-win. Others like the feel of a manual. The driver/car connection. More driver involvement and greater control over the vehicle. I drive a DCT (in manual mode 100% of the time) and think it's pretty damn fun. Just right for me. All of us here are car enthusiasts, or we probably wouldn't be here, whether we drive a manual, auto, or DCT. It's all good.

It looks like the OP has a clean car with reasonable miles. Unfortunately, the One is no longer made, and it appeals to a specific audience. Dealers aren't going to give you much for it.
You might get $10K from a private party, but you are going to have to "sell" or promote it. I'd keep and continue to enjoy it. The M3 is a boat and will suck every extra dollar out of your wallet. Also, you might ask yourself, "Why do I think an M3 will make me happier than my faithful lovely One?" |

An '11 is an OLD car in the used car market. It could be in pristine condition and still not be worth much.
In the private market it is a different story. You might get lucky and find someone who'll pay a premium price for the car, because it punches all their buttons. |
