Look up Z4 sound generator on youtube.

Edit: 135i also have a sound generator, according to ETK. Dang. Someone be the guinea pig, pls. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...r/13717575658/
When I fitted the AFE aFe CAI stg 2 version, I tossed the original completely.

Reviewing the realoem diagram, they present a circular filter element

The 09 USA version in my garage oem was a flat, say irregular rectangular element. Furthermore, I removed a charcoal filter, much thinner section than the main filter, shaped the same IIRC

Quite unlike the diagram on both points. All that tubular conductor is gone if it was ever there

From makers, this entire synthetic creativity is an automotive equivalent to fake news

I also took the liberty to find a better retaining system for the air filter, and covered the engine side parts of the upper intake tract with foil tape to reflect any extra heat away from the system. I left the rest black, because the black should radiated the heat already in the system out.
I'd be interested in knowing more about the outcome of gapping the airbox. Got any DIY steps so I could try it out? I'm looking for some extra sound on the cheap as long as it is reversible.

Sure, I'll take some pics and go back through what I did tomorrow. I'm tempted to bring back the noise...

Just another thought, the BMS cowl filters really do make a massive difference in sound. I hear so much more from the engine now. Mind you, for me that's godly turbo spool/DV "pffts", but additional NA induction noise will undoubtedly come through as well.

Thing im scared for about the filters is washing my car and all the water that drains off the windshield. Should i be worried about this if i get them?

I've had them for over a year now through torrential downpours, snow, sleet, pressure washing, etc.... Never had an issue. You should be mindful when washing the car that you don't soak them but due to the angle of the filters and hood it's not an easy thing to get water into.

If you have any doubts you could also put the small plastic cowl over them

On the 128i removing the cowl does increase sound dramatically. But with a stock airbox that sound isnt "good" sound. Mostly other mechanical (lifter) noise. I suppose an aftermarket intake would transfer a better noise in tandem with this mod.

Thanks for all the good info here...

I'm gonna give the cowl filters a shot on my 128i. I have a BMW Euro airbox with a K&N filter. I'll let folks know what I think...

One thing you can also do is just remove the large cowl tray and then bolt the cabin air filter box back in. That's what I did...

Just exploring all options...can you reinstall the cowl over these cowl filters without the cabin air filter but with the tray?

Not sure what that does other than muffle the sound somewhat, which may be a good thing if it is a bit too loud (bad noise) with the cowl filters...

You can install the BMS air filters and then put the big, heavy metal cowl (tray) on, but there would be little to no improvement in noise, and a greater chance of water accidentally getting through the BMS filters and wreaking havoc on the HVAC electrical stuff just behind the cabin air intakes.

Right now, I have the stock air filter in the stock plastic holder, and simply deleted the "tray." There's more mechanical noise coming through, and with my reinstated intake mod, there's WAY more induction noise, which is fantastic. I'll go take a picture right now...

Here's my setup as mentioned in the post above. A/C still blows cold (was a very minor concern) but the air smells a little like engine bay for a second or two after start-up.

I accept all your "hot air intake" jokes and concerns. But, I've tested the IATs, and, when you're moving faster than 25mph, they are no more than 2-3 degrees higher than the stock system. I do still want to rig up a heat shield, and grab some ducted air from the front of the car or do those silly scoops to feed some more fresh air to the filter. Plus, the noise is fantastic (clip coming soon) and then goes totally animalistic in the higher ranges of the motor.

I’m down to try this. What are you using to hold the filter in? Looks like some screws and washers. Any damage done that would not make this reversible? Yes. Sound clip please

Nothing irreversible, just hold on to the rubber stopper that sits beneath the air box. It's there for a reason and don't loose it, otherwise the airbox will rattle against the frame rail and drive you insane (ask me how I know).

I just used some plastic/wood screws and some extra large washers. Works well, and doesn't look too janky...

Bringing this back from the dead...

I killed my intake setup that I had above...again...it's just a bit too much for day-to-day driving, and it's even a bit annoying on the track (there's a resonance thing that happens and causes MAJOR drone).

However, I've been looking around, and I came across a 130i that had the sound generator from an N52-powered Z4. It sounded perfect, and is exactly how I'd want my intake to sound.

From the comments, it seems like he drilled a hole in the firewall above the accelerator, and fitted some extra tubing to make it work. The parts diagram shows that a rubber grommet is used in the Z4 where you'd have to drill the firewall in our cars, which makes it less scary to drill . Looks like it wouldn't be toooo bad of a retrofit, but some custom intake work would be required (the stock air box likely wouldn't work). It would be an interesting project, with the benefit of being able to tune the sound using bits of foam...

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=13_1173

Has anyone here done it?

Just get the AFE intake and be done with it.
