As the wheels get "smaller" the indicated speed will increase, so in your example it would be right when new and then under-read as time goes on - is that *really* what you want?

If the indicated speed would increase then it would be going slower than the speedo, which is the case already and it will only get worse. I would have liked it to be right when new, if I have to factor tire wear so be it, but if it starts at 5% by the time I replace the tires it could be 10%.

In my case the actual speed is less than the indicated, I could try and find some slightly larger tires.

Hey Mad Dragon, is this a case of the dealership can't or won't adjust the speedo?

LOL @ this whole thread. I like the 5% design buffer; I speed like a fool and rely on it as a little safety buffer; wouldn't want to get pulled over ~actually~ doing 95!

I'm blaming the lawyers. BMW has to err on the conservative side. By building the 5% error in, they should never be faced with a lawsuit from some frivoulous owner who has an accident doing 62 mph in a 60 mph zone, because his speedometer was reading low. They simply can't take that chance. This way, when they testify in court, their records can show 100% proof that the speedometers read high by design.

So - as BMW owners - you accept this and move on. Or you take your car to a shop that will calibrate the needle for you, but you will have to pay for that yourself.

I use a GPS sometimes, most of the time I simply go 5% faster and call it a day. It is what it is. Pick you battles. I categorize this one in the same bucket as the one where the stereo sounds crappy from outside the car.
