I've once had an odd incident happen to me.

I had a 335 an a friend of mine had a 535 e60. I accidentally took his key and while my car was open I started it up. I was amazed that the other cars key did this. Just to make sure we tried my key in his car and it worked as well. The key wouldn't unlock the car however and it also didnt work on a 328 we tried. Just between the 2 cars. So weird.

By the way? why was the 1M parked outside??

Shouldn't that car be in the garage locked away from jealous eyes?

unless you have better cars...

Their garages aren't big enough for a 1series..

as a lawyer part of me wonders if a products liability or negligence claim properly lays against BMW for implementing a design which so easy allows for the car to be stolen. (This is in reference to the OP's post, not your comment Rob)

Rob that's insane. I can't believe that keys from two separate cars and two separate models could start each other.

Hey man sorry to hear that, I'm from Bulgaria and I have seen similar device to start car without keys. Also, there is software that you can install on old computer and do same things. People who showed this device to my friend (he has X5) started and stopped the car without any keys. They were trying to sell him some hardware device that will prevent this to happen. He didn't buy it and two weeks later he crashed the SUV. It is very common in my country, cars that are not with Bulgarian tags to be stolen with similar devices. I hope they can find your car or insurance company to pay you back all money.

This is an unfortunate situation and all my sympathy goes to the owners and others who've had their car stolen. But the most basic security system could have prevented this.

A Garage.

If you don't have a garage, well, I would reconsider buying any vehicle you can't afford to lose.

Also, this is also not a safety issue so BMW is not required to do anything about it. Every vehicle has their security loopholes and if it is worth stealing, thieves will think of a way to take it.

Hope you get your car back in one piece. Damn it, those car thefts are getting smarter too!

For manual owners. I think a clutch lock is a good way to prevent or deter a theft. Works on brake pedals too.

So traditional key insert please. Porsche didn't bother with leave your key in pocket and go.
