Questions on Dinan Tune

Yes, I know the Dinan is expensive for what you get, but I like the matching warranty. Really not looking for a tune war here - just looking for some info on Dinan that I didn't see in other threads.

I have a 2011 N55 vert DCT. If I get the stage 2 Dinan:

- Will it work with DCT?
- Will I feel it in my daily driving?
- Will I feel it in all modes (i.e., without sport button or M/S mode on)?
- What's the impact on gas mileage?

Thanks for any info.

you will feel it in every "mode". the car will spool stronger and harder, likely at the expense of a small amount of comfort and smoothness. My gas mileage is very similar on cobb stg 1+ to stock, no real difference there. This is generally speaking, not dinan specific. Get a tune and never look back, as most members on this forum do at one point or another.

I cant believe the difference with a Stage 2 and exhaust both by Dinan. I actually bought a 2010 so i could have the N54 with the tune though. your results with the N55 will be similar.

Big difference with any tune. Dinan makes good stuff, conservative but definitely noticeable. I have the Dinan tune and love it and my warranty.

2012 dct, got the tune at ~2300 miles, right about when i got my coilovers. i'm now at 5600 miles.

- Will it work with DCT?
most def.

- Will I feel it in my daily driving?
most def.

- Will I feel it in all modes (i.e., without sport button or M/S mode on)?
sho nuff.

- What's the impact on gas mileage?
could just be the break-in/car getting used to me, but i went from 17mpg to 19.9mpg in my mostly stop-and-go daily driving.

you get a lot more boost at lesser throttle positions.

you'll enjoy it. in fact, if you don't enjoy the bump in power, the terrorists truly have won.

I agree with everyone above. I have the 2012 N55 (manual trans though) with Dinan Stage II and love it every time I drive the car. Little more money but I feel every dollar spent on it was well spent and the peace of mind to have no effect on warranty is worth something to me too. The pull of the engine is smooth, has no flat spots I can feel from 1,500-6,500 rpm. Buttery smooth, hard acceleration is the Dinan stage II experience I have.

Car is different with the tune. Well worth it (with the peace of mind).

Well, then, I will take a stand for my country and DO IT!

I would thank you all for your input, but I think you guys may have just cost me $1700. Damn you all!

BTW: when the car gets a software upgrade, does the Dinan need to be reinstalled? Who pays for that?

Dinan input

You will be paying for any reinstalling. Basically the typical 90 or 100 an hour fee for install. I had Dinan Stage 2 on my 09 135 for about 18 months and finally went over 50K on my car so I've installed a COBB.

On stage 2 + aggressive the COBB is definitely a lot stronger, probably a good 30-50 HP stronger. I did go to the dealer about 5 times for different services, etc and never had an issue with them with Dinan installed. I also really never felt a different in driveability or even gas mileage if I drove sensibly. Lot's of highway miles for me, anyways, Dinan is great, just expensive.

Good luck.

that's at odds with everything i've been told thus far.

if bmw updates your ecu, dinan will flash it again for free once their appropriate flash comes out.

if nothing's actually broken and the ecu update is stupid, just tell them not to do it. if they somehow sneak it on, just go back to your dinan installer and have it flashed.

the problem is that most places seem to only do dinan work during the week. THAT is where the expense ends up--vacation hours.

about cobb: good luck. they're now saying <6mo to release. I'll believe it when I see it. cobb is notoriously slow to release on pretty much all of their products. they put out some very, very good stuff, but it takes forever to come out.

protune vs. dinan is where the real advantage in cobb lies. /sending his car off for s3 in a couple days

If for any reason the Dinan tune needs to be reprogrammed due to a BMW update they do it for free or so there website says. Haven't run into that issue yet, but I have no reason to believe they'd just make that up and put it on the website.
" Free Dinan Software Updates for the Life of the Car, if BMW makes an update so do we." straight from their website

I can tell you for sure you wont have any issue with bmw alexandria denying your warranty from a tune...if that is the reason you are limiting yourself to dinan, i wouldn't worry about it

Ugh - owned by Rosenthal. I grew up in this area, and I can tell you their reputation has always been terrible. And the times I ventured in there, they were complete horses arses.

You will be thanking us for the $1,700 you spend when you hammer the throttle the first time.

I believe so. I'm in the same boat. Leaning towards Cobb for N55.

Are we still eligible for CPO? Some said BMW won't offer CPO or extended warranty once we installed Dinan tune. Just heads up before anyone pulling the trigger though. I'm thinking to do it because it is provide us with much torque and hp but planning to keep the car after the warranty ended

From everything I've heard your extended warrantee won't cover issues related to Dinan tuning after 50k. Again, if this is the case it pretty much seals the deal for me. Why not go with Cobb and just uninstall it prior to dealer visits? You could buy an accessport, exhaust and a few other goodies for the same price, especially after installation.

But other than tuning problems it will be covered by the warranty right? Any body here can comment on the reliability of Dinan stage 2 tune on car with 50K+ miles?

Anyone knows if I will still eligible for extended warranty if I installed Dinan tune? How's the reliability of stage 2 with stock components?

Thanks

My 135i had S2 when I purchased it and I was told I couldn't extend the BMW warranty, although they did offer me a 3rd party solution. I declined and keeping my fingers crossed since it's up this Sept and I got 2 more years of payments.

You guys think I should have any worries, it's a '09 with only 41,000 KM and never tracked.

Thanks =)
