I'll try for some pics later on, but there is no difference in pipe diameter at the connection between the mids and rear - it's 76mm. This goes for both OEM/N55 and the HMS mids. The only difference is in the flange design - HMS has a solid flange, OEM is rolled and thinner.

Ian, that probably won't happen seeing as I got them to install it But yes, when the valve is closed, you would have to assume that it's legit.
The dealer even left some earplugs in the car when I went to pick it up after the midpipe mod. They're good chaps at Doncaster.

Did you use the original BMW donut gasket between the N55/HMS sections?

Between n55 mids and HMS rear you would use the existing donut because of the flange differences. I used the HMS mids which if you can see in the very last picture (I know it's not great quality) uses a standard gasket as the flanges bolt directly up to each other without the original spring bolts. All new componentry is provided.

Adding a recent track day video of the HMS exhaust from the interior at Phillip Island. First time tracking this car - was a lot of fun, even on the stock PS2s!

Got some good laps in, traffic was a bit frustrating, and the geese sometimes pop-up out of nowhere (check out 9.40).

Dyno charts added to the start of the thread.

Had the car on the dyno today to finally quantify any power gains from the HMS mids/rear exhaust - definitely impressed!
Stock car ran 214.5 rwkw over two runs.
Best today was 232.7 rwkw over 3 runs (224, 229 were the runs preceeding).

This is on an otherwise stock engine! That's ~18 rwkw from mids and rear only. Any variables that could be standardised were. Same dyno, same operator. Unfortunately couldn't be done on the same day (have been running the exhaust set-up for a few months now). BUT, even accounting for whatever variables may contribute, that's a definite gain in power AND a tad more noise

After having the pleasure of meeting Pete and having a chance to sit in his car for some WOT runs over the weekend, I have to say... this is the best exhaust I have ever heard!!

Now to start saving the pennies for a BMW performance exhaust to get a close enough sound.

Cheers mate. Good meeting you too. I really liked the tone of the BMW PE on the 135. You won't regret it, unless you need more volume.

Some photos of the HMS with RevoZport Raze diffuser:

Haha, nice! Looking very clean. I think you have the boot lip in carbon though. I'm still running the stock one, so almost the same cheeks!

Piets94 are you still by chance running your HMS setup? i've been browsing through axle-back exhausts to put on the M and i saw your videos, love the sound of your HMS exhaust, and your review. do you still feel like an axle-back would be enough for the car? our cars definitely sound good i just wish i could hear our exhaust notes and that signature burble a little louder, thanks in advance and hope to be hearing from you

Hi dig, yeah I am still running the same exhaust set-up - stock DPs, HMS mids and rear. Really happy with the sound and quality of the HMS unit, have had no issues to date. Can't believe it's been 3 years+ already!

I'd always start with just a rear exhaust if you're after sound and not chasing power. Changing out the mids ratchets the aggression up a few notches - you really appreciate the valve function on long commutes. If you're after burbles, you won't be disappointed with the HMS. It's a true Jekyll and Hyde exhaust.

Happy to answer any questions you have, should find a few answers in this thread.

Piets94 yeah i've been enjoy this thread, just wanted to ask if you still feel like the axle-back alone would be pretty good on the sound front. i was wondering if you remembered whether the axle-back alone added a noticeable amount of volume over the stock i'm just worried the exhaust won't be noticeable louder without the mids, thanks again

With the valve open on the HMS, it's a straight pipe exhaust - there's plenty of volume with just the axle-back!
Having said that the mids just make it more aggressive. A fellow 1M owner in my city was running HMS with Berk mids (black car) and it sounded very different to mine, I thought better tone but less aggressive. We did a quick vid:

i saw this! didn't realize that was yours though! love the sound of the HMS mids over the Berks, I'm definitely just looking for more volume from the exhaust just not too much where I'd have to be careful of the cops in my area, thanks for again for the update i'll probably be putting in a order for the axle back soon thanks to you

Glad to help 👍 Any cops around just flick the valve switch. Good to have options.
