front driver brake issue
Been experiencing what I believe to be a sticky caliper on my front drive side wheel. Sometimes its fine, other times I can tell its starting to stick just by how the car drives. It seems like it always happens after I am in stop and go traffic. When I park it for a while, let it cool down, then dtive it again it is fine. Also, when the problem occurs I can feel the heat coming from the rotor/caliper if input my hand near it. Plus the rotor has some discoloration as compared to the other 3.
So my questions are: is there any other fix I should explore before I replace the caliper? I understand there are guide pins? That the caliper slides along that sometimes rust and need to be replaced? Also heard it could be the rubber brake line itself? any advice and insight would be appreciated. |

There should be a caliper repair kit from BMW.
Otherwise, one user, the one with the air ride system that he uses for winter ice rally, he has bought 128i and 330i calipers for $100/side, which inclides the caliper carrier. this means a 330i caliper is an upgrade to go along with z4 e89 330mm rotors

well today I pulled the caliper off, cleaned it up, replaced the slider pins, lubricated with silicone brake grease.....problem still persists. also, when I had the caliper off, I used a c-clamp to collapse the piston and it went in pretty easily. I was happy because I thought that meant the caliper wasn't seized. but I reassembled it and went for a ride and it wasn't any better, it was still sticking closed. if the piston moved easily, could the caliper still be the problem?? my brake pads still had plenty of meat on them so its not like the piston is extending to its max point either. the rotor has taken a beating though, I may have to replace it.
any other suggestions?? the rubber brake line seemed fine too, I didn't see any bubbles or anything that looked like a problem. where did that member get the calipers for $100?? |

replaced the caliper, problem solved. very easy job for anyone considering doing it yourself. amazes me that the cheapest price I got for labor to replace a caliper was $120. i'm in the wrong business. found a local shop that got me an OEM reman'd caliper for $80.....plus I called them on a Saturday morning, they had it for me by 2pm Monday. I paid a little more than what I could have from online vendors but I couldn't wait I needed the car fixed ASAP.
