TPMS Installation
Hello gang!!
Just received some brand new OEM TPMS that i need to install on my winter 18" wheels. Never had to deal with type of sensors before. They didn't come with any instructions. Anything I should do when installing these things? Do they require torquing? I see a there is a rubber seal, should that be greased? Looking for direction/help, in order to get my winter set-up on the car. Thanks

No one?
I did STFO, and it seems that the TPMS Kit that i got, is missing the metal? "washer"s that goes on the outside of the rim then followed by the screw cap, last the valve plastic cap.

Good question. I just got four TPMS kits from Tire Rack recently, and they came with no instructions. They came with two different style washers, and I'd like to know which one to use and a recommended torque value for tightening the cap.

As Charles said, it's a great DYI. I didn't see the torque value mentioned but it's 4NM or 35in./lbs.

3.5 Nm (you can read it on the Beru sensors) isn't a whole lotta torque. No wonder why everyoes collar nuts back off. I wonder if one should use some blue loctite on the threads. ?

*DING* round 2.
My frustration grows First, thanks to VMRwheels for this link w/t pics. Left work and made it to my local BMW dealership this afternoon. The parts guy was helpful, but also really baffled. The parts show no listing for these Spacer rings... Looking at the DIY link, The valves that i got 36 14 6792829. They DO NOT include the "spacer ring"(pictured on Pic 5 from the attached link) Getting very angry over these stupid TPMS so...........still looking for help guys.

Maybe you do not need the "other" spacer. I looked it up on RealOEM - it only shows one valve stem & TPMS sensor. Did you PM Gill @TireRack?

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...37&postcount=2 ...and totally over-torqued my valve stems causing them to snap. Trying to find a replacement valve stem for my 2008 135i has caused nothing but problems, everything I've gotten has been fitting quite loosely. |

The valve stems only need to be SNUG. They only need 3.5 Nm or 2.58 ft/lbs!
By comparision the oil filter cap needs only 21 Nm (I think?) (or 15.5 ft/lbs) and that is about as tight as a lid on a pickle jar. |

*DING* round 3 I finally WON!!!
Dropped an email last night to TisherBMW about this issue. Email Pings back this morning: "The valve stems are the updated versions, no spacer ring required/you just have to keep tightening the collar nut/eventually break loose and thread together" Got home tonight pulled the car in the garage, and walked over to my work bench. Grab the TPMS, look for an 11mm socket, but................damn!! Its not working, I need a long deep 11mm socket I dont have one. Looking around.............and Oh oh, standard 7/16 deep socket will work < making head way here guys and girls> So...........i started cracking down........damn you 3.5NM!!! The damn TPMS is ON and looks tight and sturdy, and lets hope leak free. Come Saturday morning at 8'clock, I shall be at the tire shop getting the snow tires on the TRUTHS will be revealed Thanks for everyone help!

Sorry I caused you some grief. I really meant to say that you just wat to get them snug. I just had the wrong Nm values. 3.5 Nm is what you want for the TPMS stems. Dackel |

Thanks for the update. I know you were well intentioned, so no point in getting upset. I'm just glad that no one will make the same silly mistake that I did.

Let this be a lesson learned! Don’t trust anything you read on the internet unless you can verify it from at least one other source. And to Dackelone: Please Please check your numbers prior to your post. And I personally think you should be responsible and pay for the guys TPMS that read your post and damaged them. I wonder how many others damaged their TPMS based on his torque settings.

Well... in my defense I did say SNUG and 1/4 turn. I think I used the word "like 15Nm" but that was the wrong torque value. Sorry.
I just got the Nm rating wrong. I think you always have to use "common sense" when working on your car. IF you don't feel comfortable or want to take the responsability don't look for others to blame but yourself. |
