My "build your own 135i" pricing spreadsheet
Here is a pricing spreadsheet I put together with several assumptions (a $34,000 list price and using the pricing of the options from the 335i). You can play with it if you want, I set it up to include tax in the price also.

As most of you already know, The options and ordering guide is now available at bmwusa.com.
I am a 60something year old track junkie who is hoping and praying that this car comes in at low to mid 30K base currently Working for a BMW dealership and tracking a highly modified RSX S see my dilema??? |

From what I've heard from my Dealer, $35k will be a WELL equipped 135i (sans navigation basically). Much higher than that and it starts to encroach upon the 3 series. I appreciate the effort, but from what I understand, I think your base price is a bit high.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. The base is going to be very close to 30K. I wouldn't be surprised with a 30.5K base. This car will need to compete with A1S in the future (which is relatively the same size), and leave room for a reasonably priced convertible. Moreover, the base won't be higher than a 328i, which is in the low 32's. Having spoken with my local dealership about ordering a 135i in the next few months, it is quite possible that a reasonably equipped 135i will be in the 35K range/w options, etc. You can probably ballpark down a few grand from that price, helping to cover licensing fees, etc. Considering the looks of the interior, this car is going to provide the possibility for a 35K price tag, given its lack of luxury (which I don't mind). But if you add a bunch of options, I think you're exactly right on the >35K price tag. But given that BMW has released pictures of the interior w/out nice wood finish, etc, it doesn't appear that this model is being marketed with the same emphasis on luxury as the other BMW models (looks closer to STI interior quality) hinting at a reasonable price tag. My guess is 35K for a low/reasonably equipped 135i, and into the low 40's if you go after the premium package, automatic, weather package, Nav. etc. This 35K w/basic-low options will give those who want more luxury the means to add additional options, w/out exceeding the low 40's. Remember also, we have to leave room for a reasonably priced 1 convertible with/options as well. As such, the price for a basic 135i/w basic-low options should be around 35K, given the price of the 3 series, and the economics of selling fully optioned 135i's and 135i convertibles.

And for both our sakes, I hope you are wrong. At that price point, I start to wonder about BMW's business sense. |

I'm in excel all day too... its a pretty slow day so I've already integrated a loan calculator into this spreadsheet.

35K is way off. The 135i may be higher than 30K but it won't be above 32.5K. I think between 30K-31K. This isn't competing with the bigger A3(S). It is competing more so with the A1(S) or somewhere in between the A1(S) and the A3(s), so rethink your prediction accordingly. Did you see the interior of the 135i? I personally think its cool, but it's not 35K base price good, or even close. Is it even nicer than the all leather/wNav 2008 Accord coupe interior (new Accord is faster than 128i BTW-somewhat relevant to price of 128i)? I don't think so, unless you start adding options. This car is meant to fill a void in the market, and basing a 135i at 35K (meaning a 128i at around 30K) will not fill that void. It will add competition to the Z and 3, without addressing the lack of an even close to entry level car. How will BMW address the future TSX (which is expected to be very fast) at a 35K base for 135i?

Honda Accord pricing is irrelevant. We're talking apples and oranges. The Accord is a big, dull FWD car. The 1 is a small, sporty RWD car. BMW is a luxury brand. Honda isn't.
