How would the Z4M use the 1M's upgraded N54 if the 1M already features the engine from the Z4-35is?

Z4M with a fixed roof, reduced weight, M suspension, LSD...

...if it had the M3 V8 it may have very well been the last BMW I'd ever own.

Wow, can't believe I'm the first 1 to be excited for a lightweight track focused 1M like Porsche is doing. Bring on the 4 banger, if it comes out of the M division by 2015 it will have at least close to 350bhp

SCOTT, any plans to incorporate hybrid technology into the next gen M2 - playing the Efficiency Dynamics tune like the VED or is this too expensive a technology at this time for this price point?

Ok, so Audi, Mercedes, mustang, Corvette etc, will continue to fine tune and produce V8 sport coupes. But BMW will drop the V8 and blur the line between 1M,M2, and M3. Why? The next M3 should continue to have the S65 motor but with the bumped up displacement of the GTS model(4.4L) pushing 460hp. It's a win/win. The m3 maintains a clear lead over it's rival's and it's siblings. And they would have saved the RandD of a new engine for the M3. This will be a loss of the leadership role of the M3.

I know the next M3 will impress but I'm not paying 72K for a m3 knowing the
1M has the same motor but detuned. i know BMW says it's about "green" issues but thats just an excuse to merge all the dang M-cars together.

Today I took for a ride in my 11' M3 ZCP 6-spd modded to 460hp a car girl who has a 328, she was blown away. getting in the car she says "wow, it sounds so good" a few quick laps and she was delighted and surprised how fast and how well it handled.

The loss of the V8 M3 is akin to the decline of once great civilazation, to see it at it's zenith then see it slipping away ever down.

I keeping my v8. Not selling it, I might buy the next model but the v8 is just to sexy to sell. What about the M5 could they drop it to a V8? O is it going to stay as a V10?

The M3 produces 290 g/km of CO2.
The 1M is 224 g/km.
Legislation is underway that would mandate 130 g/km average by 2012.

Who can make the most power with the least fuel is now a critical question, as it should be imho. Unfortunately high revving natural aspiration is a recipe for poor efficiency. On the bright side the new motors (and cars) will be much lighter and much better for it...

By 2012 F1 will be 4 cylinder turbo- the same power as now but 40% less fuel. Such is progress...

It's already been announced that the next M5 will be a TT V8. V10s are probably gone for good, as far as BMW is concerned.

I am looking forward to the new M2. Similar or more power than the current TTI6, lighter package.

Indeed. I wanted a 6cyl M of this size and so the 1M will fill that role perfectly.

Besides we could all be driving electric cars in 10 years, or not driving them ourselves the way technology is going.

That's progress.

+1

BMW has long reputation in making exellent straight six engines and the four cylinder engines in the original M3 is a masterpiece.

M cars should be all about high reving screaming engines with light body. Thats the original recepie for a M car.

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

It's interesting that BMW seems content for the next 3-4 with this current M lineup. While the next M5 may be coming, it caters to an upscale luxury market not the enthusiast market.

I think in the past BMW felt they could get away with offering nothing to the enthusiast market for a year or two. This may have been true in the past due to a lack of competition, but is no longer the case today with ample challengers coming from many directions.

For instance, I have an E46 M3 I bought just a year ago because I wasn't impressed with the E92 M3 after coming out of a Z4M coupe. I looked hard until I found a pristine non-sunroof ZCP Alpine White on Cinnamon example. This car appealed to me far more than any E92 M3. Now after a year I still love the car and plan to keep it long term, but also want to add an even more focused sports car with more power.

Looking across the BMW lineup at present and for the near future there is absolutely nothing for me. Therefore BMW is turning people like me towards other brands.

When I think about my options for the near future in the under 70 thousand dollar range, they consist of:

1. 997.1 GT3
2. 997.1 turbo
3. 997.2 C2S
4. Or god forbid maybe some american uber muscle like the GT500 or potentially the upcoming Z28 Camaro

I think BMW needs something that can compare with these cars at their higher thrill level sooner rather than later. Likely in the form of some sort of 1M CSL or M3 CSL type car in the next year or two. Otherwise those like me aren't going to be patient forever.

Also there is the fact of SCOTT26 mentioning that the next gen 1M and M3 will have more hardcore versions later in their life cycles to emulate Porsche and its GT3 apparently. This makes me even more unlikely to be willing to buy BMW at the time of the next gen M releases.

Sorry Scott, but while I love the 1M, I won't "believe" until BMW Military Sales announces that they'll offer it. The only realistic way for me to purchase a US Spec BMW is through Military Sales and if they don't offer the 1M due to it's limited production, then I and many like me will miss out on the 1M solely because we're stationed overseas. I would view this as a slap in the face to a market that MUST have good sales numbers for the ///M Division considering the number of BMW's (and ///M cars in particular) seen daily.
Bring the 1M to the Military Sales market (no discount required) and I'll not only believe, I will purchase my 3rd BMW product since selling my Audi in 2006

Sounds good!

I just don't see how they couldn't use the S65 in another car. Please BMW!

RIP M3 V8

.... Could the 1M next gen/2M not just be given the upgraded capacity engine in the first place

I wish BMW would keep the current M3 in production until 2014 in the same way that the E46 M3 continued production even though the E9x cars had already been released. BMW could continue adding minor improvements to the M3 while they await the next generation M3.
