Ok a bit of an update on progress. So the new setup was still rubbing/catching on the lower leading edge of the inner guard even after bringing in the wheels by 16mm. So a more detailed study of the 1M rear guard edge shows the whole edge being rolled right from the corner where the guard meets the skirt. The 135i has about a 6" edge that is around 15mm wide and then it rolls from there, so this is where it was catching.

So we looked at a number of options and the easiest was to cut/trim this edge off. Problem fixed!! No rubbing/catching and by doing both sides it looks neater than the picture and with wheels fitted not out of place. Picture 1 135i (with damage). Picture 2 1M. Picture 3 solution.

That explains why we had such difference clearances!

The Prior Design extensions have that lip cut away & blended in.

Thanks quad exhaust being quoted on Saturday and pricing up a set of Bilstein B8 shocks. Going to retain the factory springs as I do not want to lower the car. May upgrade control arms and sway bars etc but will start with the shocks.

Despite a suspension specialist giving me the suspension all clear when I got the car serviced both front shocks were leaking and on their way out.

If my BMWP steering wheel and knob don't sell will get them dealer fitted when I do my airbag recall.

Really really happy with it just a screw around working out the rubbing.

Latest update.

Have ordered a set of Bilstein B8's and will retain standard spring height to address the softness in the suspension. These are on their way from ECS Tuning.

Went to a couple of custom exhaust shops in Adelaide and they no can do a custom setup for me. Apparently the USA has a greater choice of custom mufflers - I was told we simply have no generic muffler available that will allow me to do a quad exhaust, and now understand why custom systems like Hartge were so expensive.

So now going the 1M quad exhaust route so will be doing the battery tray conversion. At this point will just order the tray and heat shield and hand over to my Independent mechanic and see what else we need to move etc.

Lots of people have done quads on 135i's
Can't believe no one in Radelaide wants to have a go?

No such thing as cant.
Find a shop that can.

Don't buy a 3k exhaust from usa.

No problems I am happy to go the 1M route now and definitely not buying a $3k exhaust from the States.

So this is confusing me atm, given people here have the hardware, assuming they've got answers lol...

1m Track width: 1542, offset +23

Vs

135i Track: 1496 + 52

29mm difference in offset*2, 58mm.. 1542-58 = 12mm narrower, 6mm per side (which itself is a weird measurement to me, why 6 .. is the rotor hat 4mm thicker for 10mm total narrower hub?)

But then...

135i rear hubs are 10mm wider each side than 1M.
This can be sorted with the right combination of hub flanges and rear brake discs or wheels with 10mm more offset. If anyone is interested I'll update this post with the parts required for the mod. Also, my converted hubs will be available soon (to make way for full M3 rear end).

There is a lot of room on the inside so I'd even go more than 10mm extra if planning wide wheels. With the converted hubs I'm running 19x11 ET25 with 295/30 Pilot Super Sports & -2 camber and they rub very slightly on the guard.
Apparently it's 10mm narrower per side for 20mm total, not 6/12?

vtl you've worked on a few of these conversions no?

flinchy I think this topic covers your question- it seems to be 20mm?

Yeah that's for e9x and e87 compared to e82, I did the hub swap on my 130i for 135 rotors

Just wondering where the 8mm is made up if the hub to hub width is exactly 20mm narrower in the M3 setup and there's only a 12mm difference in track when wheels are off

mmm good question when my 1M wheels wouldn't fit without rubbing I played around with the et's on my new rims to get the fitment I needed whilst retaining the 135i hubs. I actually came in at least 5mm's each side to give me a buffer for wider than advertised tyre sizes. So based on what you have calculated I think the 10mm is overstated but unsure if it is a calculated figure or close enough?

I expect the 135i hubs are 10mm wider per side, as I think they are the same as the 2009 LCI E90 rear hubs that were widened. However the 1M has different hub carriers, different brake discs, probably different wheel bearings(?) as well. There are a number of unknowns that could make up for the apparent 4mm discrepancy.

EDIT:
What I previously thought above, was not correct. Hubs are different part #'s
E87 130i hubs: 33416760058
E82 135i hubs: 33416771082
E90 LCI hubs: 33326783667
Rear wheel carriers are also different for E90 LCI.

I have the converted hub setup out of my car now so if someone wants to measure the distance from some reference point to the hub face on an OEM car we can confirm what the exact change is.

After a few false starts delivered my car yesterday for its custom quad exhaust fitment. Pretty cool Mad Max style abandoned looking factory setting.

Has been a frustrating process as I initially ummed & arred about 1M OEM or a custom system. The 1M parts are available but these, plus new battery plus fitment and a 2nd hand axle back exhaust (if I could find one) had the $ quickly adding up. So I decided on custom but unlike the USA the off the shelf availability of mufflers is limited and all the traditional outlets would/could not help. So I got put onto some custom shops and after meeting and taking some measurements could not a quote out of them so things stalled for a while.

Only the Bilsteins to fit once this job is done & the car will be complete (for the moment...)

Exhaust done & diffuser test fit. The diffuser was a bit tricky wasn't confident in forcing anything so will get the body shop to fit.
