Climate control question
When the automatic temp is set my fan speed light bar stays at one bar. It never changes even when the fan increases in speed. I was just checking if you guys get the same. Now on manual setting the lights increase with speed of fan.
Thanks and happy new year ! |

This is because BMW changed the way the climate control works. Now, in Auto mode, the fan speed button changes the intensity of the airflow. That is, it affects the overall range of airflow from the fan, rather than the actual fan speed. In the older climate control iteration, when in Auto mode, the fan speed adjusted as low or as high as the climate control felt necessary and that fan speed was shown on the fan speed indicator. So, what you're seeing on the fan speed indicator when in Auto mode is the overall intensity of the fan. You can adjust it as low or as high as you'd like. I've spent quite a bit of time with a 3-series with the newer version and personally, I don't like it compared to the earlier version. It seems like the newer version never has the "right" fan speed; i.e., it's either too slow or too fast. You also lost the Rest Heat function with the newer climate control.
Side note, my understanding is that you can code the newer version to behave like the earlier version, Rest Heat and all. |

If you press Auto, the fan speed indicator bar will move according to the speed that fan is set to? Or, it will move when you press the fan speed button (up or down)?

My wife likes the new version a little more. It seems to compensate on the fly as opposed to simply maintaining one fan speed and varying the heat accordingly. I am sure there is some mega-complex algorith behind it, but it works out. Now it seems like we can have "auto" without a constant whirr the whole time (well, it was a little noisy in the E83).

This will only happen when you have it set in automatic air filter mode (A with the little circle around it). If the system detects something "bad" in the air then it will switch to re-circulation mode. It's just basically closing out the outside air.
