I was informed that serp belt shredded and caused a mess. However, the cost to fix is out of my budget. Does $8k in repairs sound even possible lol? Worth it? I feel like I am in the twilight zone.

So angry and so disappointed. Open to thoughts and offers?

Take it to an Indy

My buddy just did this exact same repair for his own 335i n54, It's a common problem. I think the charge was like less than 1/3 of that 8k quote. To bad you are not in California.

EDIT***
Here are picks of the shredded belt in the pickup tube and screen. You will also have to replace the front seal.

Was it caused by leaking oil filter housing gasket? My indy said this is a real risk when the belt gets covered in oil from the OFHG.

I was curious if there are any other causes.

His was degraded belt due to dripping oil from the OFHG, it snapped and gets sucked in the front of the motor through the front oil seal and ended up in the oil pan shredded clogging the pickup tube and causing a low oil pressure condition.

Brake job is pretty easy DIY... Rotors are not really that expensive and honestly super easy to change.

Not sure how a valve cover gasket is $1400 either. Maybe I'm missing something, but the gasket is like $60 or whatever plus the special glue, it's easily accessible. Seems like it shouldn't be more than 3 hour of shop labor or a 3-5 hour DIY. ???

Rest of that belt confetti cleanup, no idea.

I'd just eat the 500$ shipping speed and send it to Rob at SpeedLogic. I'd bet he's waaaayyy cheaper than that.

Lots of good info here but if you joined BMWCCA you'll soon become acquainted with chapter in and around Phoenix. Adam T is club president and he will be a gold mine of good info.

BS on the front seal, seems like the OFHG, which is a job to fix but def doable for any DIYer.
Not sure how the belt can enter the front main seal? Is that a Harry Potter thing?

I'm curious to how the belt would enter the engine as well.

Didn't think that an oil leak from the oil filter housing could cause such a catastrophic failure. Better check my oil filter housing for leaks periodically then.

It's definitely a thing. Tons of documented cases on this very forum. More on N54Tech and E90Post.

Get those oil filter housings leaks fixed fellas. After belt is sucked through the front main seal, it gets much more expensive than a cheap gasket and a few hours labor. Infact, blast the intake valves at the same time and make a day of it!

Original problem could have also been caused by a loose power steering pulley bolt, as well documented by Jake.

In the January 2019 issue of Roundel [monthly magazine from BMWCCA] the technical editor posted this warning:

"NOTE FROM TECH TALK: N54 ENGINES
There are rare but costly occasions of poly-ribbed belt-tensioner failure leading to front crankshaft-seal damage. Replace poly-ribbed belts and their tensioners preventively every 60,000 miles."

Now the editor is saying that the tensioner fails causing the belt to break. I think, as do others here in this thread, that the leaking OFHG leaks so much oil onto the belt that it breaks.

Whomever was doing oil changes on OP car, should have advised the owner of the leaking OFHG. Affects N52 as well. I recently pulled off an alternator from a E90 [N52] and the alternator was completely covered in oil.

I've seen this time and again. People who own BMWs and don't take them to the dealer or a good indy who knows these cars well.

I just had to replace the alternator on my car due to the OFHG oozing out oil from the back(and front) and dripping into the alternator..pulled it off and the bracket that the alternator sits on had a nice puddle of oil sitting on it. definitely need to look out for the OFHG leaks and get them fixed ASAP>
