一仔 has a new sound

BMW performance exhaust has been installed for a week now. Here are my thoughts:

In pure sound terms, it has better lower rev rumbling that the stock exhaust lacks. Stock exhaust has a silencer which makes street driving not as satisfying. It feels like there is something restricting the air flow at low speed. It feels like the 1er has asthma. .

The performance exhaust sounds the best when it is low speed, cold and is close to wide open throttle. In cruising, there is a low tone rumble and may annoy someone. I used to own a stock Honda Integra DC2 Type R. The Honda does 4000rpm @ 110kph on 5th gear. That is way more annoying I tell you.

How should I describe the noise. Let see the video below. It is hard to pick it up with the video camera and I had to enhance the recording to reflect as best and as truthful as I can.

[u2b]<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/j5OmO4K0_L0&ap=%2526fmt%3D18&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1= 0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&ap=%2526fmt%3D18"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/j5OmO4K0_L0&ap=%2526fmt%3D18&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1= 0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&ap=%2526fmt%3D18" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>[/u2b]

I would describe it as a very dry low tone noise. “Dry” as if you have a very sore throat without any mucus on your throat. Sorry for the medical analogy here but at least this is more familiar with me.

The only disappointing thing is when the car is FOT in high rev, the new exhaust is not that much different from stocky. However, after 100km. It opens up one time today when I press hard at low rev, the pop comes in when changing gear.

It is certainly a different exhaust. I never have a tubro car before so the character is totally different from an NA car. You see NA car exhaust will make enormous sounds in high rev, making you wanting to rev the car more. Tubro exhaust like this one is totally opposite, wanting you to press on low rev and low speed – so I want to make someone heard when I pass you on the street!!!

taka - awesome noise. I'm always wanting more noise from my exhaust but worried about any possible droning at constant speed...

Droning is personal and everyone has a limit. There is certainly increase sounds at freeway speed. It is a matter of is that too much.

I call it "Yat Jai" so my RX-8 is a "Ba Jai"

I am very impressed with the performance exhaust. It is not really over the top and does the job I wanted it to - some way better than the other. I wish the top end has more sound though.

Is the muffler a straight through design? Just wondering how the performance muffler differ from the stock one, as they look very similar. I would like one that is quite a bit louder than the stock one at the top end. Given that this is a turbo car, with 2 sets of cat convertors, the noise is pretty well dampened, and if the performance muffler is not a straight through design then it is probably not going to be that much louder than stock, even though it does remove one resonator.
Taka, did you get yours from Dan@united?

No I got it from Andrew. If the unit got taxed on entry and I get Andrew to install it, it is pretty much work out the same. I rather let me friend earn the $. I hate giving money to government - who end up wasting it.

For your technical question. I hope Andrew will answer it. I think the resonator has gone but there are still 2 cats. It may not pass EPA if the one of the cat is gone and I want to stay legal. Hence going for the Performance Exhaust.

I'm glad your happy with it mate.

The BMW Performance muffler kit comes with a rear muffler and a joiner pipe that becomes a resonator delete pipe. The part is the section that requires cutting of your standard exhaust system. The BMW performance muffler also takes away your vacuum operated rear flap in the tail pipe tip.

If anyone would like a quote, please email me.

That is the reason I got it all done by Andrew is because of the cutting bit. I rather Andrew did the cutting cause he is a BMW "surgeon" haha.

Andrew, I have discovered a very loud exhaust sounds when starting off from the traffic light.

Only happen a couple of times ... in cold engine, getting of lights, in D mode, pressing hard to pass something and get ahead.

It is VERY LOUD VERY BRASSY.... nothing wrong with that? Nothing is loose in there?

Save the shipping....I'll take it. Looking for something to waste $$ on, but the 1er wasn't featuring high. That clip is helping it get there.

I'll be looking to get the BMW Performance Exhaust installed when I purchase my 135i next year, from what I've read it looks like I'll have to import it and get someone like SouthernBM to install it. However, because the car will be a lease, will this cause any issues when trading the car back in? Or will I have to get the stock exhaust put back on (is that possible?)

Also, are there any warranty issues with having the BMW PE? Will my dealership kick up a fuss that I've had it installed?

Thanks!

1. Yes, just have the stock put on when you hand the car back.
2. No warranty issues as it's a BMW authorised part
