Proactively Replace TPMS Sensor?
I need new tires on the rear. Given that my build date is 9/2009, should I just go ahead and proactively replace the TPMS sensors? I have no idea how long they last, but 9 years seems pretty long.
Also, should I go with the OEM 36236798726 sensors, or is there a generic equivalent that works just as well? Thanks. |

I'm curious about this too, although a couple months ago I mounted new tires and switched out a couple curbed wheels and moved my 9 year old sensors to the new wheels. So I will wait until one fails and then probably replace all 4 (and eat the mount/dismount cost).
4/2009 build date (come to think of it original battery and brakes too) |

It's actually a decent idea. They do have batteries inside and 9 years for any battery living in ambient temps or hotter is asking a lot.

I was wondering about this the other day. I have a 2011 and just got some new tires. I forgot about it at the time and the tire shop didn't ask if I wanted to replace them.
How long do the batteries last?

I have a 7/2008 build date. My TPMS acted up around a month ago, what could have been exactly 10 years post when they were installed. Said 1 needed air, then 10 secs later all needed air. I knew that was not possible, figured it was time for TPMS modules. I went ahead and check air, added a little in most of the tires, no luck. Then maybe a day later it said only one tire needed air. I added a little and everything has worked since then. I won't need tires for a while, but I guess I might install new TPMS modules then.

I just opened the August issue of Roundel Magazine and the Tech Talk section on pg. 104 has a letter re: TPMS Sleuthing.
According to the article, a 2011 128i with 52,000 miles, had a "system inactive" warning with a tire & exclamation point in the middle come up. It states that average TPM system batteries last 8-10 years. And BMW dealers and most tire shops have a reader to see if the monitor sensor is working. I have no idea if I changed them last time, and didn't this time either, so I guess I'll just run them until I get an error message. :
