255/40/18 Rear Fitment

I burned through my 255/35/18 Federal RSR's in about 5000 miles and decided to go with a less aggressive tire as those were pretty loud and useless in the rain.

I had a great experience with Federal SS 595's on my Mustang and while they are technically an all season tire they have great grip and low noise. I wanted to go with a thicker rear as I always thought the 35 series looked oddly thin, and I could not find many people that have run a 255/40/18 in the rear with stock wheels.

Almost every search said not to do it because it would throw off the speedometer and rub, but seeing as the overall height changes by about only 1 inch I went ahead and took the risk - glad I did.

I think it really fills out the back wheel arch nicely and there is absolutely no rubbing. Additionally, the optimistic BMW speedometer is now closer to true MPH with the larger rolling diameter. I am on stock suspension, no spacers.

I'm always a fan of beefy looking tires. I played it safe with the 255 35, only because I'm planning on going a little lower soon.

Looks good on yours!

I believe 255/35 matches the original tire diameter too

that is awesome!

I have a pair of used 255/40/18 sitting in the garage waiting for me to get around to installing them. I went used in case they rubbed, so now I know!

thanks
Gary
