Mobil 1 oil compatibility

Hey so it's time for me to replace my oil, I wanted to get Mobil 1 0w-40 but a couple people told me that Mobil 1 isn't BMW compatible anymore. Can you guys shed some light on that please! Thank you in advance

The new Mobil 1 0W-40 "FS" formula is not LL-01 approved any more.

Castrol 0W-30 and 0W-40 are still LL-01 approved and just as easily available.

P.S. I am talking US here, I noticed your profile says you are in Germany.

What is your OCI? You could probably still use the Mobil 1, just not for an extended interval. I think it has a lower viscosity, TBN and HTHS now.

I like to change my oil pretty regularly so it's roughly every 7-8500 miles

First post linked was from Dackelone, also living in Germany. I have to believe you can find on of those in his post.

The PX still sells Mobil-1 European blend 0w40 which is LL1 approved.

Problem is IF you are living(and driving in Germany) you should be using a LL4 rated oil for the low sulfur fuels sold in Germany. LL1 rated oil is for the USA's higher sulfur fuels.

Also... a LL4 rated oil can be used in the US, with high sulfur fuels. While you can not use a LL1 rated oil - where a LL4 rated oil is spec'd. So you really should be using a LL4 rated oil.

I use German Castrol oil in my 135i, even though I have access to the PX oils. I prefer the German Castrol bc it seems to run a bit cooler oil temps(almost two needle widths). I normally change my oil every 7K kms.

Sometimes you can find good deals on oil at Obi or Kaufland or Toom - over here. I normally just order two 5L jugs of Castrol on Amazon/de But the last time I did that the oil took forever to arrive... so I will probably just pay a few euros more and buy it locally.

Dackel
You can use the LL-04 rated oil in the US but it is a mid-SAPS oil, so lower TBN/ash content. I don't think all of the US has switched to the same low sulfur levels as Germany, so your OCI should be shorter if you do use it in the US.

Many people are using "Aral"(German oil) for the N54 engine.
