Maybe the yellow is there for testing purposes-testers arent allowed to rev to the full red quite yet?

If at the end of the day it's your own opinion that counts and if you dont care what others have to say, especially from a credible automotive journalist, why you bother coming to a forum to read what others say? Too much time on your hand?

No, that looks like a real finished product to me. If BMW wanted to prevent journalists from revving past a certain point, they would just set the rev limit there electronically.

^ Yea I think the E46 M3's warning, yellow band, starts prior to 8,000 rpm too, therefore making the hard limit of 1M at 7. Unless this is during warm up

So, re the Tacho, it is fair to say we will not be seeing the variable redline as per the E9X M cars, shame, I must admit it is cool seeing the redline rise inline with the temps

I highly doubt this engine will feel like an NA engine. I've driven an N54 335i and the throttle lag compared to an NA M car is just atrocious. There was literally a 1.5 second delay from when I floored it and the car finally got going, utter garbage.

Is there any merit in the fact that Chris Harris is the only journo we have seen in a VIDEO during his test.

Looks like he pretty much took all his own recording equipment (hence why the quality of some of the audio is poor).

Does this say that BMW regard him highly enough too to let him do this? Or the other journos didn't bother recording video or that they just haven't released theirs yet?

Either way, Chris is very well respected and has owned his own M3, so I too value his opinion very much.

I guess the Mercedes could be an EVO fleet car.

This is what he had before the M3.

Chris Harris is the best automotive journalist, whether it be print or video, today if you ask me. His combination of driving skills, knowledge of the subject and eloquence is unmatched. Also, he's never afraid to criticize a car no matter what it is whereas other journalists seem to get in a Ferrari or even an M car, know they're supposed to like it, and spew a few minutes of love onto the car just so people don't realize how little they actually know about the things they're supposed to talk about.

At the end of the day, though, you can only decide if you like a car by getting in it and driving it yourself so to me, this is a great sign but I continue to reserve my judgment.

From his comments, it implies he had this while he had his new M3. He's good but in my mind, Tiff Needell still holds the crown. That 911 is a dream. Makes me want to fulfill my dream of a cayman s w/ tpc and capristo. :P

No difference on the tacho then, but Vmax at 300 instead of 280.

is it just me?
Bmw seem to be spending a lot of time revealing this car
you know the whole we'll show you bit by bit
test drives on an unreleased car? i don't think that's ever happenbed before on a BMW
and if you notice, on all the stories written about it
there is always the quote "drives like a real M car"
why is there an assumption that it would not?
unless...
BMW know this is not really an M
this is a 135is
but they are testing the waters for the Real 1M on the next body shape
so they are trying to drum up interest

I agreed with everything you said up until the 3rd last line (see BOLD and UNDERLINED above)

they are not testing waters, if anything they just know its not like a real M car (no M heritage), therefore they are possibly pushing the car onto the magainzes and the testers and making sure they say "good" things, such as " it drives like a real M car".

PS. Those gauges are disgusting, it looks like a fucken Subaru WRX or somethign.

i think they are revealing it bit by bit because there has been so much public outcry for a 1 series M version - this being because the e9x m3 was such a departure from what the BMW M3 had been since 1994-2006 (inline 6 cylinder n/a cars). so they are capitalizing on peoples desire for this car - considering how "unique looking" the e9x m3 was, i think this car is 10x prettier.

Now w/the v8 and BMW's future going to turbo cars - the whole "real M" car is naturally aspirated motor where there is no turbo lag and the car pulls all the way to 8k rpm.

this is not a M specific motor, but it should be something special.

Sorry guys, wasn't that impressed with his ability to describe a car "inside and out."

lol

I don't buy cars based on what others think of them, I buy them based on what I think of them. Granted it may be hard to get your hands on a 1m, which is why I watched the video, but still, wasn't impressed with his "journalism" perhaps it's better in a magazine...

That is my opinion and last I checked, I was entitled to it.

Personally I would rated Steve Sutcliffe as the better of the two, mainly because of his wealth of motoring experience, far exceeding that of Chris but that said Chris is one of the better journalists out there and doesn't mince his words.

Regarding the car itself, I got the impression from his report that BMW walked the tightrope, balancing the building of a car which offered a bit more fun and playfulness than the M3 which pleased the enthusiasts among us but distanced it from it's bigger sibling by not allow it to be quite as quick which will please the M3 owners.

It a tightrope walk which they appear to have completed without falling off.
