Hey nice review. Im just gonna touch on the gas mileage thing.
The N54 doesnt like to be new. It burns gas, mine burned a quart of oil, I was getting worse mileage than my dad's 302 Merc etc. However, after the 15K service that all changed, once you get past break in the car just gets that much better. And it keeps breaking in. Over the subsequent 10K miles to 25K the car is still getting used to itself. Your mileage will keep climbing until that point. and then it wont come down. I routinely get north of 30 and sometimes up to 35-36 MPG in my vert on the long drives from NYC to Syracuse. This is an example from a few years ago |

Drove E46 M3, E92 M3 and now E82 1M (and of course S1000RR)
The 1M is much more like the E46 M3, raw and unfiltered compared to the E92 M3, which is to big, (to?) smooth, filtered, but still a very good driving machine........gives a lot of confidence to........I would say the 1M is in the middle. E46 M3-1M-E92M3 (from raw till smooth) Maybe that is the biggest difference; agility and roadfeedback in favour of the 1M...........therefore it is feels the 1M has to earn confidence......... |

Well written comparo. I like your closing about Superman/Iron Man! That's classic.

All M3's: e36, e46, e90 are in the same class in scca autocross, STU. The e30 runs a class down in stx.
I have driven them all and the e90 was just too big and the seating was bad, IMO. The e36 is still the fastest of the 3 in street tire autocross trim. The 1m has not been announced to run in stu, but it probably will and it will be faster once built than e36. As for track cars, I have no idea. I would think the e90 would me the fastest out of the 5 m cars on a track.

I have my 1M already, my M3 sedan is in production so should be here before Christmas. I ordered one of the last E90's with ZCP and 6 speed. Looking forward to doing my own comparison.

"The difference between the M3 and the 1M is the difference between Superman and Iron Man respectively. Superman has a day job as mild-mannered Clark Kent with the ability to come to the rescue in the name of justice with almost invincible power. Iron Man is a raw battle machine designed and driven by a rich, womanizing, egotistical alcoholic."

Great review. I own an M3 E92 and a modified 135i. Of course 135i is not 1M, but i would think that the size, performance and driving dynamics between these two are very similar. And i agree with most of what OP has stated except for the last statement.
I will take an M3 straight up, thank you very much. |

That's where you would be wrong. They are not very similar at all. I've owned a 135 in stock and modded form (coilovers, tune, brakes, etc) and now a 1M. They are completely different.

Have you driven a 1M? The rear diff alone makes it a 'completely different' experience. That combined with the wider track and the "completely different" suspension geometry from your 135 also makes it "completely different".

I would assume the difference between a 335 and M3 would be a good place to start.

No, i have not driven a 1M. But as far as i know, the main difference is open diff. vs LSD , wider track advantage 1M , stiffer control arms and rear subframe bushings for 1M. Have you driven any car on the track? I have, and my modded 135I with DCT (no LSD) beats a lot of fast cars including stock E9X M3 and stock 1M with wider track, LSD, no DCT. I am not saying that 1M is not a great car, i am sure it is, i am just saying its not ''completely different''. For your information DCT makes bigger difference on the track, not LSD.

No, saying a modded 135 is like a 1M is like saying my wifes 335 is like a M3. It's modded and fast, but don't be confused. M Division does alot more then coil overs and a tune! |

And as to you beating 1M's on the track, there must be a variable in there for the drivers ability. Heck, I've beaten ZO6 Vettes in my Spec E30! |

As Jhall said, saying you "beat" other cars (most likely a DE ) doesn't mean much at all, but Im sure you knew that already right?

I can put all this debate to rest. a month ago while at the track a local pro driver had a go with my modded 135. the same day he took MDORPHIN 1M around the same track. six months earlier he had competed in one lap of america in a E90 M3. the times were, 1M = 1:27.5, M3 = 1:26.5 and my 135 = 1:26.2. can't get more objective than that!
