"2-series" Names registered by BMW.....

Well heres what BMW has registered in terms of 2-series car names so far:

216i
220i
225i
218d
220d
M1
M2

So it looks like the 2-series name is probably for real with a strong european launch expected... The US would probably see the 225i for sure and who knows if they would decide to up the ante and go with a 230i (or more) later on as they did with the 120i/125i->130i

Well this might be interesting. I don't know where you got your list, but I just searched the US PTO site. I didn't see any of the number designations, but it looks like "Z2" was registered . . . on March 30 2006:

Baby Z4?

Interesting find bmwfreak. Based on those that means they plan to make a 225i with the current 3-series 325i engine and then the next jump would be an M3 (say with the current M3 engine). Wouldn't that be too big of a gap in horsepower #'s?

Yea it might be a big jump, but then again we dont know what the M version would have in terms of an engine, it might be an all newly derived engine specially for this car, or may reuse famous engines from M cars in the past, its really up in the air, but I agree, if this car sells well, it may be expanded to a another car in the middle to cover that gap such as a 230i with the 265hp 3.0l engine (non turbo'd one)
