Afe header

Hey guys,

Now before we start I know and have read *damn near religiously* St!gs and 63128eye? (you know who Im referring too) LOL reviews and articles regarding the supersprint and other header options. I was curious if anyone had any insight on the Afe one? (is it worth the money etc etc etc?)

What a shame they make "race only" headers with cats. Saw the pic and got excited hoping that someone was making a CARB-exempt set.

From my experience with other AFE products, I would go with the gutted BMW headers before I went with AFE. Certainly better than the MMX headers though. At least they are made in a country that understands the idea behind quality control.

Price is similar enough to Supersprint that I wouldn't see the reason to take the risk. $75 in savings for an unknown quantity?

They claim similar gains to the supersprint headers, but I doubt you'd get the same quality. St|g and 63128eye are pretty much the pioneers in header experimentation. SS seems to be the most promising IMO.

In California, the headers would require testing by the California Air Resources Board to receive an exemption, else they would not pass the visual portion of the emmisions test. It's stupid that it doesn't matter what's coming out of the tail pipe. Might be able to sneek by the stock 130i exhaust manifold, though... :-?

I thought Cali was plug in only at this point for modern cars?

Unfortunately, not. No more rolling road with a sniffer up the arse, but still visual with plug-in.

If we got rid of the visual, the SEMA folks would be dancing in the streets.

Realistically it should. You have 200 cell cats in your mid-pipe, the Evolve Tune should keep your car from throwing any "Service Engine Soon" lights, and you shouldn't be able to smell much carbon pollution from the back of the car.

I'm from Indiana though, we don't have emission testing so I could potentially be missing something..

I got it from SuperSprint directly.

Evolve tune will pass plug in emissions.

My concern about AFE is as follows about the design.

Where is it optimal to place high flow cat:

Ideally is it at Headers or at Midpipes?? Most BMW //M's i've seen offer cats in the midpipe. With o2 sensors being fooled somehow
- Afe headers were designed so that they would sell and compete with maganflow direct & OEM replacements but offer additional performance and no CEL light.
- Afe was designed to also be solf alongside their exhaust which has cat less midpipes for e9x
- Supersprint n52 design follows their v1 or v2 for e46 m3, a proven 15-20 hp header, maybe more with alpha N and other tunning parts.
- Supersprint offers high flow cat midpipes.

So in an ideal world. Where do you place catalyc converters to reduce smell but gaim most perfromance??

PS: Asked aFe over facebook, the dyno plot they show is from an Auto RWD e91 n52 with their intake + headers, nothing else.

Or to put it simply, any dyno showing gains for their intake should be immediately suspect.

This does intrigue me as I have an n51 and evolve does not have a specific tune for it since there are no n51's over there. I don't know of any other tunes that can turn the rear o2's down so I may be screwed with catless headers. If the gains were really what they say it may be worth it.

I'll probably give them a shot. I don't want to deal with CELs and smelly fumes from catless headers (like my last car)

in a sense it would be cool to see a dyno for a comparison
