cup holders

I do NOT like the new cup holders, and mainly their new positioning.
I've still got my E46 till May, and I am curious as to how you E90 owners are dealing with the afterthought cupholders in this new design?

The center console is pleny big enough that BMW could have had a least 1 cup holder there, and I just can't figure out why they didn't.
I don't like the idea of liquids sitting up that high perched right above the electronics of the HVAC and audio system. What was BMW thinking?
Audi, on the other hand, actually put 2 cup holders in the proper place where the E46 has them, and BMW went the former Audi route and put them high in the dash using flimsy plastic bits just waiting for disaster.

I did notice that it looks like a cupholder add on could be fashioned to fit in the space just aft of the shifter. I think it's there for a cell phone? Any accessories offered by BMW to make better holders?
All I need is one, for me, the driver. Everyone else can just hold their. Watts u wit dat!?

There is a 3rd space in the armrest

It fits a tin perfectly and even keeps it cool if you want

Not shure if a cup will fit

I am coming from an E46 as well, so I can empathize. The drink holders DO actually hold most drinks well.

There are also two more easily reached if you keep the rear seat armrest folded down.

Finally, I have been using the Ultimate Cupholder (google it) from my e46 with much success.

The E90 just takes some getting used to over the near-perfect e46.

It's just a new kind of perfect!

I give little thought to cup holders unless I am in a boat or riding in the back seat of a hire car. I don't agree with the Germans about many things but do agree that drivers should be paying attention to the task rather than talking on cell phones, drinking coffee and/or reading novels.

Are you a slave to your car or is it the other way around?

I would have liked some better cup holders, but the truth is if your cup will fit in the cupholders in the car, they are very good. I don't worry about anything spilling. Even with a really big (24oz) bottle of soft drink I haven't had any spills. I do keep the cap on, though. Just in case.

How fast do you corner with a drink in your cupholder, though? I'm afraid to take corners too fast with a drink there. However, it does seem very stable--almost impossible to spill a 20-24 oz cup.

I'm not out racing the car with something in there, but I don't take corners slower because of it. I have made some fairly sharp turns and not spilled anything. Like I said, I keep the cap on though just in case.

Yeah, I think driving normally would be okay. I'll watch it closer next time. I always keep the lid on also--otherwise the soda would spill out for sure, even if the cup doesn't fall out or tip over.

..... this is the US way of thinking, first lets build the cupholder then the car! I remember when the SAAB 9-3 was redesigned in 2003 and the marketing blitz was at first about the cup holder and how it spun out like a butterfly flapping it's wings.... that is what happens when a US company buys a European one, design those cupholders!!!

I actually think the new design is better since it does not hamper shifting when the female is drinking something in the passenger seat, I prefer not to drink and drive! I do use it when I am parked and have a water while pondering over my notes.....

Compared to the MINI these things are a dream anyways!
I think all cupholders have there issues; my buddy works for GM and we took out the new Escalade (not released yet) and noticed even the cupholders in that thing suck.

Every single time I come across a thread where someone expresses an opinion about how they don't particularly care for how BMW designed something in these cars, several people always come out and attack the person by saying they are stupid, ridiculous, etc. for complaining about whatever they are complaining about. Why can't people just discuss the issue without attacking others? I have never seen a site with so many people that just go around attacking others.

I really like the cupholders and they have been very useful. I didn't like where they used to be because it's hard to put your drink there when you are driving IMO. I didn't have a E46 but I think it's same as the X5.. BMW cant make cupholders

They could leave out the cup holders for all I care. I might use them once or twice a year when on a very long trip. The E90 is not "the ultimate fancy coffee sipping machine". They can also take out the "ooh lookie I can put on my eye makeup while I drive" mirrors in the sun visors too while they're at it.

Forgive me, but I drive a long commute daily through one of the busy stretches of the NorthEast corridor of I-95 and I see it all. An hour each way, and I manage to do it without a coffee or a slurpee or an Egg McMuffin. Driving is for driving.

Not an attack on the OP, just one of my biggest petpeeves. Oh, and anyone without bluetooth should not be allowed to own a cell phone.

It's not just in this site, I have seen it in real life, I just let the bitter people be miserable and go on about my life.

No food, no drinks consumed in my car, not because I say so, but just because it hasn't come up. No need. I never use the cupholders.

They do look quite whimpy, dont they.

I have a rule of no food in my car. A rule that both of my kids hate but are willing to follow. I carried a takeout coke (with the lid) in the cupholder once and thought it was very well in place. I suppose that once I get another car, the no food in the car rule will no longer exists, and then I think I would like the cupholder placement cause my wife can give me my coffee every time I am thirsty.
