n54 tranmission question

I was in ds sport manual mode, coming out from a dead stop, around 10mph, i accidently clicked the paddle to shift to 3rd before it hits 2000 rpm. the dash showed "M3" but the gear hasnt shifted out to 2nd gear. the dash would show m2 again.

is it common that auto tranny won't shift into the higher gear at too low of the speed? sorry for the noob question

Yes, the transmission will not blindly due whatever you ask it to.

I think it's good to have those failsafes in there in case we do a mistake. For instance, it won;t shift down unless it is safe to do so (over rev).

The only thing I wish it didn't do is auto upshift in M mode.

Not true. Even when at dead stop you can shift the tranny to any gear.

Incorrect. If you knock it into manual mode, and attempt to start in 5th or 6th gear, it may say "M5", "M6", etc., but the highest gear that car will actually start from a standstill in is 2nd gear. It's all a matter of electronic programming on BMW's part. This rule applies for the 6HP, 7DCT, 8HP, etc.
