The only time he really crossed the line is when he saw the apexes up ahead in front of him with no blind corners in sight..

That's okay from my point of view.

Thanks! Looks good. Won't the template for the 1m be the same as the 2011 smoked precuts laminx has?

Darn internets!

I'll stop by and have a template made for the 3rd brake light tomorrow before I head for Road Atlanta.

Hey Dan, tell Steve we need to get the 1M on track tomorrow. I'm bringing my GoPro camera, helmet, and all the nomex I have.

The film on my headlights is the lightest they sell. It's not nearly as dark today as it was in yesterdays pics. It's almost 90 degrees here so the glue is setting up quickly.

Joseph,
I'm really surprised you see a problem with this. The only time I aggressively crossed was at the gravity cavity where I could see about 1/4 mile ahead. I wanted to really put pressure on the front end to see if it would bottom out. (It didn't) All the other times I would track out and touch the lines with plenty of grip to change my line if need be. If you watch again you will see I never crossed a line in a blind corner where there could be a problem. I don't want this to turn into a debate but I politely disagree with you. 2 local sport bikes followed me south and stopped at the cross roads gas station to check out the car and chat it up a bit. They both told me I was driving good and safe, unlike a certain WRX that was there. The last time I went to deals gap I had a slow Harley coming the other way cross over by 3 feet for no apparent reason and I had to put 2 tires off to avoid him so I know the dangers with the variety of skill coming and going. I always leave room for error on the street so although I may have touched the yellow lines I had the grip to change my line if need be.
Cheers,
Dan

As far as I know it's different. We used the 1 series template and found the 1M was different. It seems the headlights on the 1M are different to accommodate the wider fender line. They made a template off my car just for the 1M.

Exactly. I'll do the same thing on twisty roads out here, but never if there is heavy traffic, or you can't see far enough ahead. Our taxes pay for both lanes, why not use them?

Thanks for your initial impressions and the video. Well driven! And good to know you have twisty roads over the pond!

lol easy fellas...at least both of them were polite enough to express their differing opinions without entering a stupid argument like it happens in most threads on these forums.

When we had an F1 GP a few years back Schumacher would ride a motorcycle through this road after every U.S. race. He was quoted as saying it was one of the best roads in the world. If it's good enough for him...
I'm lucky to live in the middle of a ton of excellent roads and little traffic most of the year. (It gets worse each year!) The Dragon's Tail has received so much publicity over the past 5 or 6 years it's really pointless to go up on the weekend in the spring, summer, and fall. It's an hour and 10 minutes from my house so the occasional mid-week dusk visit is nice.

Dan, at 1:55 in the video, the car really seems to accelerate quickly. Is this because of the video's perspective, or does the car really truly accelerate that fast? Did you ever use full theottle? Have you driven a 135i and how does it compare?

1M Square Setup with Stock 19X10's

The first thing I thought when I saw the 1M in Detroit was that the front wheel wells could house the back wheels to create a square setup. I think I was wrong. (See pics)
I flip flopped the front and rears tonight to see how the front looked. I backed it up and turned the wheel lock to lock while rolling slowly. Nothing rubbed but I got out and checked and I think the tire was about 3mm from rubbing the chassis or the little speed sensor box so there isn't much room for a different offset. Anyway, a race car with a ton of negative camber would probably suck these up nicely but I don't see it for a street car. The side of the car would require some mud flaps in front. The only M car that should have mud flaps is an SUV. I never thought I'd be able to say M SUV in one sentence.

The more I drive the car the more I want to leave the wheel/tire size alone. They really dialed the understeer out of this car.
Thanks M

That's 70-80% throttle in 1st gear. It's fast. Prepare to replace rear tires on this car. I have drive a couple 135's but it was with a salesman so I can't really compare them.

at 11:40 in the video when you reset for the rolling start, are you going down those bends in 2nd or 3rd gear?

Thanks for volunteering up your lights. I'd be happy to get the full shade or the ambers only.

laminx should offer a 2 parter: the light tint to cover everything but the ambers, and a separate precut film that is of the dark tint to cover the ambers.

Wow--great review--nice comparos too. Many have wondered if the 1M is a newer version of the E46 M3, so to hear your thoughts on that is great.

You will have a great time at the Tail of the Dragon...went there with my dad in my 135 and his Z4MC...I couldn't keep up with him in the 135...

The thing I loved most about his Z4MC was the sound...and feeling...of the entire experience. When you revved that baby out, you could feel it thoughout your whole body...8000 RPM in the S54 is really hard to beat...always made me a little sad to get back in my 135.

You have to be the first 1M in the US--I haven't seen any deliveries outside of the EU--you are one lucky dude. Congrats!

Ugh this review makes me want one... badly. We have has similar history in cars (e46 M3, Z4MC, and I even had a tuned 135) and if you like the 1M this much, it seems that I will as well. I feel as though I would have kept my 135 if the suspension could keep up with the power I had (roughly 425whp).

I may need to stop at the local dealer this weekend...

Is the front wheel/fender gap as big as it looks in the pix?

The front has more gap then the rear. After driving it at the dragon's tail and then yesterday on some more bumpy roads and feeling the suspension travel I see why it sits a little high in the front. BimmerWorld is going to be looking at the car soon to come up with a few suspension packages. Motons are a possibility.
