Drone has to do with an annoying low resonance sound that happens with some mufflers. This is especially apparent on more aggressive exhausts in a lower RPM range and can be due to a variety of factors including muffler design or mounting issues causing the muffler to vibrate against the chassis or metal underside of the car. This will reverberate through the cabin and not only sound terrible but in some cases can cause headaches.

So Drone, is the vibration of the muffler, and coming into contact with another part of the car?

Have you ever been in a tiled bathroom and hummed.. and the sound reverberated through the room at a certain frequency? That's droning.

My audi droned in 6th gear at 70mph with an aftermarket exhaust installed. The aggrevating sound went away if I downshifted to 5th or increased speed up to 75mph. The system had straight through borla mufflers. It sounded great around town and on short trips but the droning got old on long trips.

Yes, the certain frequency range of engine noise hits a resonant frequency in the exhaust and causes it to vibrate.. and it sounds like everything is vibrating, working its way through the entire frame of the car and finally reaching your skull.

Check around the forums, because I don't think anybody with the CP-e system has complained about any drone.

Also if you have any fear, leave on the cats and just replace the rear of the exhaust.

Actually, I had the full cp-e cat-back setup and the drone was enough to give me a headache by the time I got to work every morning. Very sweet sound outside and upper RPM range, but anything under 3k and it was pretty bad inside the cabin. Very low frequency that just works its way inside your skull. I'm pretty sure it was a result of removing the stock resonator, because I eventually got rid of the cp-e mid-pipes and just kept the axle-back and it sounds great, with no drone. (Sorry cp-e... just being honest here - not trying to dissuade anyone from the full setup, but I'm SO glad I put the stock mids back on and just kept axle-back with RR intake)..

cp-e sells a version of their mid pipes with a resonator, though. This is the option I plan on ordering when they finish their DP's. So drone-free is still offered.
