Nice E30 M floating around in those pics. The ti cracks me up. Sigh.

It wouldn't surprise me if that 318ti had a S50 swapped into it. Not that it would justify the M3 badge though.

Yeah I don't think you know what you're talking about. This car was/is a very popular car among enthusiasts and track rats.

It was my first new car purchase when I graduated from college in 1998. I had a white one with the M sport package. It was the lightest of the E36 lineup, it came FROM THE FACTORY with lots of M goodies, RWD(when FWD japanese cars were extremely popluar), handled good and was affordable. WIN in my book!

Though I would never put an M3 badge on the back, the car came with tons of M badging which if memory serves me included the side door molding(x2), the wheels(x4), the shifter(x1), the steering wheel(x1), the rear spoiler(x1), the door sills(x2)...you get the idea. With the M3 bumper it came with FROM THE FACTORY, the car looked good!

I wish I still had mine....

cool photos
how many cars were there?

love how the dakar yellow turned out - the color i voted for in his poll best choice!

...99% of all e36s here have M mirrors fitted - you will have a hard time finding one with stock mirros - i have only seen 4 real e36 M3s in my life though

not to mention all the ///M, RS, S, AMG badges - i dont get it - non enthusiasts dont care anyway and car guys can tell the difference - or even identify most versions just by the exhaust tip so...

318ti was the best and sole rwd hot hatch, in its own category during the second half of 90's. It was my first new car purchase as well. It was very good to drive in dry while quite terrible in wet and in winter. Then they made the 323ti with six cylinder engine and that was better, more powerful etc. Later E46 compact series was crowned with a 325ti which was the best again among many hot hatches to drive.

318ti and following hot BMW hatches are a link between older 2002 and E30 sedans and our 1M, together with M coupes (Z3 and Z4).

I have very good and very scary memories with my 318ti. It stayed with me five years from 97 to early 2002 while I was serving as a young diplomat in 3 countries (3 years Paris-France, 1 year Almaty-Kazakhstan and 1 year Cyprus) and I traveled half of Europe with mine. The US experience and image of that car is neither complete nor totally fair imo.

Ha, thanks for jogging the memory. I'll be back there in a month for a friend's wedding and it's killing me to not drive my M from Dallas to socal just for the purpose of spending time on the PCH.

Just have to say that Dakar Yellow is incredibly stunning (can't believe you're thinking about selling that unique specimen).

Seemed like a fun drive! 300 miles is pretty solid.

Thanks for sharing!

Wow, very nice specimen Mr. M-, I can see how you can miss it, especially since it was a new car purchase and it came with deep sentimental value.

I have seen a few of those with some serious M transplanted motors, must make for a fun track car given its power-to-weight ratio.

+1. Yup!

Over here in DE... BMW made three gas versions: 316Ti, 318Ti, and the top range 323Ti with an 170 PS six.

I think(?) three diesel versions were made: 316d (1.4L engine) 318d and a 320d.

Lots of guys swap in the M50/52 or even the S52 six cylinder engine into these Ti cars. There was even a German tuner who would install the V12 from the 750 in the Ti!!! Silly crazy Germans!

BMW also made an e46 Ti range as well. But only for a few years (2003 to 2005) as the 1 series came out to replace this car.
