M-Sport Dead Pedal Refurbishment

My dead pedal stainless steel insert started to de-laminate from the plastic base, probably from too many cleaning chemicals, and the bottom edge of the insert was popping up and wouldn't stay down.

I CAREFULLY released the stainless insert from its remaining adhesive backing and thoroughly cleaned the mating surfaces of the metal insert and plastic base.

I bought a 1 inch wide roll of double-sided tape from McMaster-Carr with the appropriate properties (P/N 7602A53, -40/250 F, polyester backing, acrylic adhesive, about the right thickness https://www.mcmaster.com/7602A53/) and applied it to the insert. Re-installed the insert and the dead pedal is like new.

I'll be less-thorough with the cleaning agents and see how it lasts.

Stripped a plastic thread on the PI. Replaced 'em all with M5 brass inserts and aluminum M5 machine screws.

Gen 2 Instrument Cluster

I re-did the instrument cluster with new needles, gauge faces and cluster lens assembly.

The needles always bugged me as they had a hot spot in the center when the lights were on. I fixed that with new needles harvested from an E87. Only the bottom surfaces are painted, first with two coats of fluorescent red, followed by two coats of gloss white so any light leakage would reflect white light off of the gauge faces. The clear plastic of the needle transmits the fluorescent red beautifully.

The gauge faces are new from Venoxy and even better quality than the first set which was beat up from trying different needle painting techniques. I did one little tweak to the faces, no one without a micrometer would know the difference.

The lens assembly was replaced to get rid of the clouding I got on the lens when I glued it back on to the lens surround. It took me three donor clusters until I got a one where I could separate the lens from the lens surround cleanly. The interior of the lens surround is flocked, and the gauge bezels were painted using the same technique as the first time.

Yet another 1300 mile quick-turnaround trip to the PNW, 650 up Friday and 650 back Sunday. Whatever miles I lamented I didn't drive in the 128i in 2020 I've made up for in 2021. The Frontier will be getting winter duty for the trip soon. I had multiple frost warnings on the way back.

It's just such a damn good car.

Nice job on those. I tried to do mine and I screwed up the dials, tried to open the little gear housings fix it and really screwed it up. Lol Had to buy a used cluster and send mine out to a professional to fix. Never again

Nice work. I'm thinking about the process of opening up my cluster to add USA overlays for my Canadian 1m so I can get a mph reading. Is it really that hard to separate the unit to gain access?

Opening it up to do the overlays is easy, it was changing up the bezels underneath the gauge lens that was tough. The lens is "glued" to the surround, but the surround comes off the cluster with, I think, 6 plastic clips giving acces to the gauge faces.

I cheated. I left the needles white and painted the needle body under the black cap with red, alcohol based ink.

Ah-ha, well played. Do you mind sharing the brand/color? The shade of red looks perfect

Tim Holtz brand "Crimson". I got it at the local Michaels craft store.

Suprgnat, you've made a great meticulous thread and you have a lovely car!

I also have the HPA M3 strut brace, did you notice any extra rigidity since triangulating it?

I've only seen images of 2 cars with triangulated M3 braces, yours and a 335i with a Dinan strut brace welded to the M3 rings. That also had the Dinan carbon stays in place of the factory M3 aluminium ones.

Thanks!

I felt the difference after triangulating the M3 brace was quite noticeable, confirmation bias be damned.

Spent some time on the new rear suspension carrier. I even Watney'd a paint booth.

2k, single stage "Wimbledon White" over epoxy primer.

I cleaned up the weld splatter and such and hit it with a phosphoric acid etch prior to priming. I didn't do any blasting because I didn't want to strip any of the paint on the interior surfaces of the carrier.

Haha love the home made paint booth! What's the plan for the new subframe? Updating the bushings and a whole new rear end with arms etc so you can just swap out what's there?

Going full spherical so only the diff, axles, hubs, camber arms and trailing arms will transfer over.
