New software update baaaad !!!!

I just had my software updated. Now, I can feel the dead spot at around 2500 rpm that I never felt before. 3000 rpm lurch? also feel that too. The throttle seems less responsive than before the software update.

Anyone with similar experience?

BMW has got to be the worst company for quality control I have ever seen. Seems that every attempt they make to fix something breaks four other things!

My advice, honestly: First, give terrible scores on your survey. Then, report the problem to your service monkey and tell them you want it right. Prepare yourself for blank stares and shrugged shoulders (I'm convinced that's the only training they receive). Follow up with BMWUSA (yeah, because they are SOOOO helpful) and keep taking your car in week after week, month after month so they can fuck up a lot of other things.

Or - learn to live with the problem you have and consider yourself lucky that the damn thing even runs.

Or - trade it for a reliable brand.

I have owned over 15 new cars in my life. I now own two new 2006 BMWs - that have been in for service more times than every other car I've owned - COMBINED.

LEDZEP, tone it down a bit before you scare off any feedback from these forums.

It was a legit post about his experience with the update.

Half of what you say is funny, the other half is just not warranted.

Yeah. Worst part - I traded a Passat W8 for my E90. The W8 never gave me a moment of problems.

Works for me.

I had the update to CIP20 done last week with NO I'll effects. The driving dynamics of the car are unchanged. I notice no flat spot or lurch anywhere through the acceleration band. My bluetooth phone, however, now works as it should. My car: 06 325i, Sport, Premium, Steptronic, non-iDrive.

I think the E90 is the most reliable car I've owned since I had a Saab 900 Convertible back in 1992.

In 1995 I got a Volvo T5-R and in the 3 years I owned it that thing went into 'limp home mode' twice for no apparent reason (once was in a parking garage with a 15% exit gradient; it had to be winched out) and it had to go into the shop 3 times for service bulletins.

Then I had a 1998 Lexus ES300. It was reliable, but a lot of maintenance.

After that I had a 2000 Hyundai Grandeur XG Q30. Don't even get me started on that! Within 5 days of ownership, a CD got stuck in the drive, my remote stopped working, and then the final straw was the instrument cluster lighting up like a christmas tree with only 150kms on the clock (the service people also managed to get grease and oil all over my brand new mats and it took me 3 years! to get new ones). 2 Year later, the anti-skip protection on the CD player broke down (and I assume you can imagine what the meant), followed in quick succession by the muffler (at 28,000kms) and the drive belt (at 32,000kms).
At the same time I also had a 2nd hand 1997 Ford Explorer V6 Limited. Again don't get my started. That thing started to rattle like body panels where going to drop off at any moment. They both drove like boats (although the Hyundai was worse) and were arguably the worst cars I have ever owned!

Now I have an E90 and I feel everything is right with world.

Any brand new model car is going to have it's fair share of reported issues. It happened with the new 7, then the 5, and it will happen with the 3. Does that make it a bad car? No, just means that if you want to have the brand new model of car the first year is comes out you may have to be patient with it because issues are bound to pop up. I usually like to buy a car the 2nd or 3rd year it comes out but with the e90 I could not resist.

I happen to drive A4 (B6) of the first production year just like E90 I own now. E90 is doing better so far. At least I didnt get towed three times in 7 months (like I had with A4) to service which is like 40miles away in the middle of Alexandria, VA with all the crazy traffic (knock on wood 3x). To be fair I'd say I have had better experience with Audi service then with BMW.

The point is when you buy first production year you should be prepaired for lots of software bugs and recalls.

Need more examples? Try first production years for MB M-classe and C-classe, Infinity (round ass SUV), B5 Passat.
German cars were always about enigneering and a little behind Japanise cars on quality.

[QUOTE=egtlover74]I just had my software updated.

OK, I feel like I have to chime in on this whole software update issue.

I'm a tech and have been working on computers for 10 years. If we can assume that our cars computer components have any resemblance to a PC (operating system, etc.) then we can apply the same rules.
When software updates are released they're supposed to address bugs and install new or improved software drivers for the computers components. The updates are thoroughly tested for compatibility and are supposed to take many variables into account.

Guess what, sometimes these updates cause more bugs and break the drivers they're supposed to fix. I think we've all figured that out by now so what would I do if I were in that situation?
Downgarde.
I'm starting to think that when the dealer says the update didnt take, what they really mean is that car is probably worse than it was before the update. Since it takes so long to do these updates I bet they just want to get the car out of there, so they sign it off as repaired and hope the next update will address it.

I cant believe I'm talking about a car here but from all the threads I've read about people actually wanting these updates, would any dealer want to take a chance on installing software updates that might break something, thats may be why they dont encourage it.

Unless your car is really broken, I would'nt ask for any software updates, eventually all these software bugs will get worked but in the meantime wait for these software issues to get resolved.

Thats my rant on software, one more thing, I still think the worst thing your can ever ever do is not start and leave you stranded somewhere.

I too had my software updated but it took over a day to complete. I asked if it was being downloaded over a 56K dial-up connection to Germany because I can't really buy how this process can take hours or days. The only info that I could glean from them was that these updates are done on "modules" as opposed to a one shot all-or-nothing and diagnostics are supposedly run on sub-systems all along the way. If a module gets corrupt and cannot be updated, a new one is then ordered in to replace it (but who knows how long that would take).

So far (aside from obvious updates like RDS on radio), I have only noticed that on engine start-up it revs a tad higher before slowing coming back down to idle. I loved how it previously snorted to life and quickly dropped to idle but now it doesn't sound as good. Minor gripe and I'm sure it was to address some sort of issue.

egt and ledzep,

sorry to read about your e90 issues. this forum is designed for praises, complaints, assistance and anything else we want to say. so you say what you feel. how else can we help each other.

in your case egt, was there any improvement in any other area from sw update?

maybe if you give the ecu a little while to adapt, maybe the flat spot will dissapear. otherwise find out what the update did to the mapping or anything to upset the throttle. bmw need your feedback whether they want it or not. don't you agree? let them know now but if the flat spot persists in say 300 miles, you're coming in to fix the problem.

what do you think?

ledzep, are your cars ok now?

Last night, I tried listening to a disc of MP3s but no go. I heard the disc spin up for a second, but iDrive behaved like there was no disc in the drive at all.

Sorry to hear that the saint. The service Bulletin did say though that when they will only the mp3 "patch" or code portion to the software update if the customer "complains" about it. Call your service guy and see what he says . If he gives you the crap about not being possible send him the buletin about it.
Others on the forum are claiming the can now play mp3 cds on their pre sept. i-drive cars.

Check out this comment on a post here on this forum
