HVAC blower intermittently does not work. Solution: wiring is faulty spans across sev

So this seems like a common issue that spans over several years and models I have personally confirmed this safety hazard on my 09 135 and on my friends 08 128 and on my friends 2011 328 sedan I suggest you check yours if for any reason for safety reasons it only takes about 5 mins of your time! As for the fix I have contacted my service advisor and waiting on a reply on what if anything BMW is willing to do about this huge safety concern? Just passing the word along! Here is some pics of mine and a post on m3post about this same issue! This is not normal wear and tear this is a huge issue!

I never run my blower in Auto, I always set the vents and fan speed as I want it. And every few days, I hear what sounds like the speed of the blower moving around. I've wondered if that was some sort of temperature adjustment, but now I'm not sure? Time to dig a little further...

Mine looks OK, Fritz must have strung this differently/better in later cars. But this thread is GOOD STUFF, really do appreciate the post!

Indeed! I am assuming since the 1 and 3 share so many components that it's based on those with years as I have personally confirmed 07 to 2011 may be earlier or later unconfirmed but glad yours is good! This really should have been a safety recall from BMW not one of those things you have to search for and prove to them your car may or may not catch fire!

I just checked mine. Im ok. My car was doing some weird shit with the HVAC system when I picked it up from shipment. 2 months in a lot and on a boat in transit. When I got in it, the blower wouldn't even turn on. When it finally did, it was full blast. Took 2 weeks for the defrost to start working again.

pictures must be around 400mb in size - when uploading direct to 1Addicts. Click "Advance Mode" and attach your pics via the "paper clip" icon on the edit tabs.

Or... "cut & paste" the forum code from your third party host into your text on 1Addicts.

I looked thru your link some what... I did not see any related pics. It would be nice if you could post pics and a little text.

Ok, I now see other other pics on the e90 forum for the blower motor/final stage resistor. I will repost them bellow...

Remove the bottom dash panel (two torx screws and one plastic pin at the side) and look up. Actually servicing this would require more, but with this you at least get a look.

Do all cars suffering from this exhibit the same water problem? Is that what this really is (a leak)?

All cars seem to allow a small amount of water into the HVAC through the plenum, unless of course one lives in a rain free environment and does not wash their car. The root cause of the wiring problem is likely that water is getting into the blower motor (from plenum), causing a higher current draw (but not enough to fail the resistor), which overheats the insulation and peels it back. The exposed copper (with current) then has contact with humidity and develops this lovely green galvanic corrosion seen in the pictures. One should replace the motor, resistor, and repair the harness.

Looks like it is time for me to take a look at my own car and see if I have this condition :/ ...

Mine also looked like yours Shaun. After I experienced the AC working one day and not the next (and back and forth for several days) I took it to an Indy shop who quoted $580 to replace both motor and fsu. I decided to look myself, and ended up wrapping the "burnt" wire and clip with electrical tape so hopefully whatever moisture is making it short out won't get in there anymore. That was about 2 weeks ago, and so far the AC works great every day I've turned it on

Found the EXACT same issue on my daughter's 2010 135i this weekend. Does anyone know if there is a replacement pig-tale complete with plug and wires that can be spliced in?

The blower in my car has been chirping for a few years and so I have a spare ready to install (a Valeo unit, incl FSR). And perhaps every few months, it doesn't blow at all when I start the car... but eventually comes around after 5-10min. Today it was dead and remained that way for 15+min, and so time to replace.

It fascinates me how difficult it is to work on these cars, while at the same time one of the easiest things to do is replace the interior blower (cars I've worked on over the years required the dash to be removed). This literally drops right out (pull up on the locking tab and rotate clockwise). Getting under the passenger side dash is no fun at all (and I'm a small guy), but that aside this is pretty simple.

The failed fan shows signs of having come into contact with water (the top of the spindle is corroded). Plus he soundproofing glued to the bottom of the dash clearly shows signs of water as in the pics above. And pop the FSR open, and there are clear signs of overheating (no visible damage to the wiring, I had to open the FSR to see this).

BMW needs a recall for this, this looks like a fire hazard (to me, at least). If your interior blower is factory, you might want to seriously think about replacing it.

New unit is in place and I am off to the bar
