Swapping standard 160mm Philips subwoofers

The basic "professional" system in Europe gives you 2 160mm subs under the seats. Someone in another thread said the housings are the same as for the US-fit 218mm woofers, only with spacers.

Has anyone upgraded their 165s to 218s?

You can only get the 218mm in conjunction with the whole enclosure (at about 160$ each for the Hifi-System units and about 320$ each for the Logic7 units). So allready having the enclosure for the 160mm units doesn´t do you any good.

Btw, don´t even think of putting aftermarket speakers in those enclosures. They don´t fit and they don´t work.

Changing the woofers btw, requires you to take out the seats. If you do, please make sure to use new bolts when putting them back in because for reasons of crash safety the seat bolts are on-time self securing stretching bolts. The new bolts also need to be fastened very precisely with 44nm for the new bolts to sit properly. Otherwise your seats may rattle or not hold up in case of a crash.

But the good news is, the stock 160mm woofer is not as bad as first encounter may suggest. But them on a seperate amplifier from the front speakers (you need to cut the speaker wires running to the subs from the doorsills) and give it a good active subwoofer crossover and you´d be surprised at how much clean bass you can get from those measly 160mm units. In stock spec they run without any crossover and therefore are way too boomy at higher frequencies so the actual bass is droned out. If you can get some decent EQing on the subs, you really can make them sound fine. (Not humping bumping loud - but decent).

Next up, the door speakers. Those are really nasty wide-range cheapo speakers...

Great advice, thanks. I think I will leave the subs alone but I wouldn't mind swapping the door speakers - how easy a job is it?
