AFE Air intake system
Does anyone own an AFE air intake system for their 1M and if so, which one do you recommend to purchase from AFE power? Also, if you do own one, do you feel any substantial gains in horsepower and torque?

I believe it's this one, but please don't quote me. They also sell the intake scoops. Just run up your post count to 5, then PM Dan Parker.

The dual afe filter is about 3/4 down this page. I did the scoops as well. They have to ram a lot of fresh air into the filters. You can hear the turbos quite a bit more and the quality is top notch. I haven't dyno'd the car with them on so I'm not sure if it makes power but looking at the design I suspect it is an improvement.

You do notice it a little bit power wise but it really makes a difference with a tune and other power modifications as the N54 bottle necks at the intake. It also has more induction noise. We sell aFe products as well. Also, if you are in that area you might as well replace the charge pipe before it pops off. The OEM plastic piece is pretty poor.

Curious what do you think about potential for heat soak with this setup? It looks like the AFE setup you're selling covers the top of the filter which seems to be a better design than the open top version some others are selling. The open top version has two filters vs one though. Care to discuss the adv/dis adv of the two setups? Also, which of the two intake scoops do you find to work better with the complete AFE setup? |

I was considering this, anyone else?
But without the long dual intake tubing like this:

The car is very fast stock so it's hard to feel the gains a CAI may make. The afe CAI I used has seals at the top edges and appear to press against the hood nicely. With this design I don't see the need for the cap.

Do you know how filters work? I can pull up Mr. 5's logs of reduced waste-gate duty cycle with DCI and his custom one when I'm on a real computer. (On phone now)
I will say, pressure drop increases as you increase your turbo rpm. This is why the stock airbox was designed for a set volume and becomes restrictive at higher boost levels, where a higher volume setup (such as DCI) really shines. Last edited by Fundahl; 08-31-2011 at 07:18 PM.. |

I have just gone through the 2k break-in period with my 1M this morning and have been running a AFE p/n 54 82002 sealed CAI w/ the scoops since about the 1,000km mark... While I have yet to take it to redline (5,500 is as far as I have gone), I have jumped on it a bit, and it appears to have equal power, with better throttle response. I picked up a little bit more intake sound (turbo spool) but nothing that would be deemed annoying. Since CAI's deliver most of their increased power at the top end, I probably haven't revved it high enough to experience any gains.... It is going into BMW tomorrow to get it's break-in service completed (engine oil and rear end oil change), so after leaving there I will be sure to experience the top end of what this motor can produce.
