2-Series Just doesn't look right...
Hey all, Been a while since I've been on this forum. That's because I moved on to a 2014 Z4 28i and left my 1-series to my son. Just wanted to say I was behind a 235i convertible the other day and it just doesn't have the class and uniqueness that the 1-series has. Gimmicky current BMW styling cues will not age well, particularly on this car. The 1-series will be classic IMO.
BTW... This Z, with an AFe Scorcher tune, is pretty-darn fast. Sounds good too (in admittedly... a "WRXish" sort of way) |

Well you've certainly came to the right forum with that opinion!
I definitely think the 1 looks more classic, subtle, more like the old school/true bmw look. However the 2 is still great looking in it's own right. More aggressive, new age... but just a little to close to generic Japanese than I'd like in a BMW. The 2 could be a Lexus and I wouldnt blink. Would probably throw my 135is in a junk yard compactor for an m2 though. |

Hate the 2-series. Has no personality...it's bulbous and rounded and soft. To me the worst looking F series BMW and that is pretty bad considering how pedestrian most F series BMWs are...

I just think it’s bland looking. No character. I realize the 1 has polarizing looks, but at least they provide the car character.
For what it’s worth I love the look of the 1. I see a lot of E46 in it as well, which I think is a good thing. And it helps add to the “last of the old BMW” image. Edit: I want to add however, that I do love the look of the M2. And I would love to have one, even with all the tech in it. |

I think the 1 series has the best looking side profile of any BMW in the last 30 years. It looks a little narrow straight on, but from the side, I'd have to go back to the E30 and E31 to find a better side profile.
The 2 isn't ugly, just nondescript and unmemorable. |

Newer cars are being styled to fit laws these days, specifically pedestrian safety laws which require bumpers to be at a certain height and "softness". It has a lot to do with how newer designs are not as low and sleek as they used to be.

This is why so many rear ends have odd designs, it's a car designers only chance to add personality to a car. The 1M is the best looking BMW in my opinion, the standard 1 looks very nice to me as well, sort of like a college athlete that hasn't fully filled out yet. The 2 series looks like an anonymous hyundai/toyota/chrysler.

I really like the front end of the 2 series, looks sharp, wide and aggressive.
The sides are okay, but the rear....like the 4 series is really wide in my eyes. It makes the E92 look classy to me, hell id get a 335i N54 E92 over the 2 series. I always get a bit tempted to see a M2C on the BMW website, but that rear end....something is just not right. The E82 is no pretty thing as well, i think the headlights are a bit too big, but at certain angles from the front, sides or rear its a sharp looking coupe. The tuner i visited today called the E82 "a BMW go kart", i told him it reminds me of how the E30 3 series was, and he agreed. |

I've always felt the 1'r looks a bit dowdy in the front with great looks side and rear. the 2 looks great on the front and dowdy in the rear sharing simpler lines on the sides. M2 Comp still looks rear dowdy to me but the rest with the lines and 788M rims I love em

Here's a thread I started back in 2015 about an M235i test drive and my impression of the car.

maybe it's more aggressive looking either way, the fit and finish around the turn signal 1/4 panel hood junction has always bothered me too. I never seem to mind sitting 10-2 behind the steering wheel!

The hood of the 2er seems worse to me, since they cheapened out and didn't extend the hood to the grill. Something about the 2er that just kinda looks like a Honda or something to me. The 1er is a little weird looking, but with character, kinda like the old 2002.

I was at a local BMW meeting last night and there was a great mix of old and new. That said, I had my 128 sports package car next to an M235. In my opinion, the front end of the 2 looks better, more aggressive, but the sports package bumper on my 1 was a very close second.
Also as was pointed out, the interior center stack on the 2 is huge compared to the smaller foot print of the ones center stack. In this case I like the 1 better, but I do hate that damn awkward cup holder, not really a fan of how that was placed in the car. I recently made my choice to stay with 1 series over the 2 series simply from a maintenance stand point and not having to deal with any turbo related issues. I'm very happy with my new to me 128 and the options it has. I do see a 3 stage intake in the future though to make up for some of that HP loss the 1 has |

The only thing I like better are the headlights. They're more aggressive and lend to better aftermarket upgrades. Everything else seems too closely related to the 3 series to me. The 1 to 3 series always felt like a much farther step

If you post up about styling in a PT Cruiser forum I'm sure you'll hear a different opinion as well lol
