Really not that hard to pull the consul and check. And yes the whole consul needs to come out of the E82.
Thanks.

I have idrive also so more things to disconnect. Pulling on stuff that just clips in always worries me.

Edit: found this diy video (around minute 6:00 to 19:00).

Is there any shortcut way to view the wiring routing than doing all this?

Saw maybe the best License Plate I've ever seen yesterday after dropping my car off to Rob at Speed Logic (new sportier pads and M3 FSB going on).

335d Sedan
License Plate: M3LOLJK

Cracked me up, so many fake M badges out there, this was a funny play on that trend.

Got my set of external Torx sockets at Harbor Freight. Decent enough quality for what I've needed them for.

No.
There is a white cover over the solenoid/wiring (3 t10 screws). To get to that cover you need to remove the shifter assy. To remove the assy you need to remove the consul.

Removing the consul is an extra 15 min of work. Not horrible and gives loads of room vs working in a constrained space.

Over the years I've learned that removing more things than needed and giving room to work always lowers stress level. Tight spaces and scrapes/cuts suck.

If you put in the right amount of oil, you don't need a dipstick.

Vacuum pump for an oil change sounds complex, which, on a Land Rover, is never a good thing. (Nor is it on any car, really)

Open fill cap. Flat blade to open the drain flap in the undertray. 17mm socket to pull the drain plug. Let drain. Replace crush washer and reinstall plug. Replace oil filter and o-rings on cap. Fill with 7 quarts and close filler. Done. Drive to verify oil level with electronic doo-dad (I hate that thing). You don't even need a funnel if you've got steady hands...

..
No simple. MITYVAC. Shove the tube down the dipstick hole and suck it all out. With the landrover you just hook up to a permanent tube installed for that purpose. Pump a few strokes. Change filter. Add oil.

Never lift the car. Never get underneath.

Miss my dipstick tube....

Havent been on here in a whileeeee. Hope everyone and their car is doing good!

Took my car on a date to the body shop to get an estimate on all the body damage from my hit and run, rabbit killing, and keying that happened over a year ago. In total, everything would come out to roughly $3500-4000ish. Thats just for the body work

Inconvenient when the local speedy shop puts 9 quarts in!
"You gave us 10. We couldn't find the dipstick." (He's under the hood. Holding the oil.)
"This car uses an electronic sensor to ascertain the fill level."
"Then start it up and see what it says..."
"No thanks. I don't need to blow all my seals to prove to you that 9 quarts is too much."
After much back-and-forth, they let out 1.5-2 quarts.
Never again.

It's a shame to see another Montego Blue 1er down. I don't see that many of them on here and never in person. I've got rock chips galore on mine. Someday I'll do a full repaint, but I'm sure a decent job will cost about $3-4k also.

When I was 17 I changed the oil in my mom's Civic. I had worked on my 280Z before and thought it was no big deal to work on her Civic. I mistakenly emptied her gearbox oil and doubled up her engine oil. She said it smoked like mad on her commute to work and it had no gearbox oil. I realized the error and fixed it when she got home. Amazingly the car ran another 10 years 100k+ miles without ever breaking down (although it develop a weird on/off throttle bog later in life).

I learned my lesson the hard way, but I never made that mistake again. I will never allow anyone else to work on my car because I don't want it to be their one WTF mistake. There are too many variations in cars today for a non-specialized shop to understand. At least you caught it in time to save your engine.

2nd time I changed the oil in the wife's Pathfinder I loosened the tranny drain instead of oil! She's got the CVT - they're picky, and don't have a dipstick. Luckily I had another car to grab some fluid! Estimated how much I emptied, put that much in, then scheduled an appointment for Monday to have the dealer check and correct the level. (Local indie shop was so confused at the request I had to pass.) No problems since - and the dealer didn't charge for the checkup!

HyeWarrior - we're going to miss you around here. Hope you're replacing 'er with something awesome!

Not sure what I'll be replacing it with, but its not gonna be anything that amazing. Taking a break from the enthusiast scene for a couple years until I get my degree, start practicing, and then make some decent money for a M2 Comp or Cayman S. The goal is 3 years or less

Might stick around and still shoot the shit with y'all though whenever I can lmao

Either of those cars will be a nice upgrade.

What's your practice, if you don't mind me asking?

Nice. My daughter graduated last year, and getting ready to go into a PA program. Great thing is that the hospital she currently works for is paying for it as long as she works for them for a certain period of time afterwards.

Yay! Always glad to hear people know about the profession. It's still very niche

That's a really sweet deal! She's very fortunate to have that. I'm hoping to land a loan forgiveness job after I graduate, but they're very rare and incredibly competitive. Either way, I shouldn't have trouble finding a job in Southern California lol.
