'Total loss' - but my wife walked away unscathed

Just some therapy here for me...

Our delightful E82 125i manual is no more, but I'm just so grateful that my wife is ok. In fact, she walked away from a pretty big one last week.

She was heading northbound on the Hume, left lane, cruise set at 110km/h, no traffic around, and she started to nod off. She works big hours in a high pressure industry, and although spends lots of time in the car, rarely does long solo jaunts on monotonous freeways. Anyway, the car speared left, glancing the steel post and wire catch fencing, she was suddenly alert, stood on the brakes, but it appears the FL wheel was torn from its tie-rod and suspension, so the car pulled hard left after initially being pushed back onto the road, and this time across the gravel shoulder, second impact this time front offset passenger side, which washed a lot speed, before flinging the car back onto the road before it finally came to a rest with a 3rd impact against the catch fencing.

I found the site the next day, the brakes were clearly on hard for at least 60m of the 80 metres taken to stop. All airbags deployed correctly. She was upset obviously, the violence and suddenness of the accident.

I'm just so grateful for the government installed safety railing which kept her out of the trees, and the bank-vault engineering quality of the car. The whole thing has been quite confronting.

We were only 2 yrs into ownership, and now we'll be forced to purchase a car which isn't ideal. The car is comprehensively insured, and my wife is healthy, which is all that matters.

Wow, glad to hear your wife is ok. Mustve been quite a fright for her. I cover lots of kms for work so know how hard it can be to stay alert.

Also nice that the car did its job and protected your missus.

What thoughts do you have re vehicle replacement?

It is amazing what modern cars will do to save their occupants. Glad your wife is ok and sorry about your car.

My son had a guy turn left 15 feet in front of him in my old X5 at 45 mph. (how do you miss a big black SUV?) Comprehensively destroyed. Walked away. Amazing.

Mate glad to hear your wife is ok. Fatigue is a major risk with everyone, it just sneaks up out of nowhere.
