Arrow H&R Springs/AW 1M

Took a few weeks to get these as they were on a slow boat from Germany(were on back order), but they are finally here! Arrived Tuesday, installed Wednesday.

IMPRESSIONS: I was pretty nervous that the ride would be extremely harsh given the fact that the OEM setup is the stiffest ride(aside from the Z4Mcoupe maybe) of any M car I've owned. I don't know how, but it actually feels a little less harsh to me. The 'turn-in' is more sharp and without any delay whatsoever. There is less lean around corners and it just feels more planted. The drop was measured from the center of the hub to the wheel well with a 0.85" drop in the front and a 0.50" in the rear. Not huge on paper but the appearance is more dramatic than I expected. Perfect stance IMO. An alignment was done and the rear Camber and Toe were corrected. Front Camber was still within tolerance so I don't think I will get any camber plates. I have included a few iPhone pics right after install while I gassed up last night. (better pics to follow)

Looks good. My rear camber/toe was off quite a bit after the install and as you mentioned, the front was still within spec. I agree with your review and of course the stance is great. I would go as far as say it still feels OEM which is a good thing.

Also, when I spoke to the HR reps at SEMA they said the springs were made specifically for the 1M and as a side note, the owner of the AW HR 1M on display was the HR president's car.

Looks great! I was actually going to start a thread asking about H&R springs so thanks for bringing this up. I really want to lower the car but don't feel the need to go all out with the expense and the hassle of getting coilovers.

However, I have a couple of questions regarding these springs. First, based on my experience the drop rates for H&R springs is unreliable at times. I installed the H&R Sport springs on my 135i and they dropped the car about 1/2" lower than advertised. It looks like H&R lists a 1.2" front drop for their 1M springs but you're sitting over 1/2" higher than advertised (granted your car will likely get lower as the springs settle so you might be close to advertised height).

Anyone know the normal variance from advertised specs for these springs? For others that have the springs, did you get the advertised 1.2" front drop and .6" rear drop?

Also, Metak did you keep the stock shocks or did you buy aftermaket shocks? If you are using stock shocks, do you think that the H&R springs will cause early wearing of the shocks? I've read differing opinions for the 135i regarding use of stock shocks but am not sure if those concerns still apply for the 1M since (I presume) it has better quality shocks.

Thanks!

Do you know the spring-rates? Assuming you do back-roads, how bumpy are they?

I'm still getting used to the car, but my impression so far is that the stock suspension is on the soft side, but it's also short on bump travel for many of my favorite roads in norcal. When you do hit the bump stops at the rear you'd better be ready to grab a handful of opposite lock right quick, so I'd be very nervous about reducing that bump travel further. I'm curious if you drive similar roads and have any impression with these?

This could be a great alternative to a CO setup. I've looked into KW's not because I really feel the car needs to handle better (although a little sharper never hurts) but because the front end is just too damn high and the car would sit prettier with a drop. Keep us posted on the performance and any issues you may have, looks promising and the car definitely sits nicer!

Looks good! More Pics!

Serious question - Are you planning to slightly space out the front wheels for "scrub radius" issues - now that we have all been educated from another long contentious thread you may remember?

Tire rack is now selling an H&R set for the 1M....anyone know if it is these?

Also, I am really anal when it comes to alignment. I would NEVER accept a 0.2 - 0.3 degree difference from left to right on camber. What were your caster results?

Wow perfect ride height! Wonder with these lowered springs, the more compressed shocks will give up earlier?

Thanks. It might shorten the life of the dampeners slightly but the drop is pretty modest(0.8

Yes, I don't recall them offhand, but I posted them some time ago in another thread. Might have been on Dan Parker's thread about his suspension set-up. In any case, the info came to me from a very well known BMW suspension tuner who had tested them.

If I have a chance, I'll search.

I remember reading it in the KW vs. Moton thread. Here it is:

A well-known suspension tuner who tested the stock springs told me that the fronts are in the 220-240 range and the rears 540-550.
