I'm looking to go ST, but at this stage retain stock fueling - so for a peak power of less than 500whp. Looking at a PS2 or RB dyno graph vs ST - there seems to be a lot more 'area under the curve' with a twin setup; despite the higher peak numbers (and overall ease of service and better reliability) of a single.

But what you can never find out on a dyno, is if you're cruising along in the wrong gear and you see a gap in traffic; if you do a quick 'downshift and floor it' - does a modern twinscroll spin up almost instantly like OEM twins, or are you left with (what I like to call) "subaru lag" and a flurry of power 2 seconds later?
The overall drivability is downright impressive with the BMS tune and the ACF ST kit. Things fit like they should and drive without issue, even after I threw port injection into the mix. I daily drive my car over 500 miles a week, seems to love every second, and has held up great over the past 12,000 miles since installation.

A large single turbo capable of making 700+ WHP will never give you the instant power feeling of those tiny OEM twins, but I would never never go back and I doubt you'll find anyone that's converted to a single who would. Any turbocharged car will feel laggy when flooring it from 2,000RPM, but as long as you're around the 3,000 RPM mark, things come alive right away. The difference in lag between a capable single turbo and twin turbos is negligible, especially a twin scroll, ball bearing smaller PTE like my 6062. I hit full boost around 3,500 RPM.

BUT going single turbo or even upgraded twins on a stock fuel system probably isn't a great idea. Why wouldn't you consider any fueling upgrades? At the very least you'll need a stage 2 LPFP. I started running out of fuel (E40) at just 17psi on my single turbo. That's why I recently added a stage 3 LPFP, new HPFP, and port injection to add even more E85. That's really the only way to fully take advantage of any turbo upgrade.

After a week of driving the wife's Pathfinder to and from the airport, and tooling around the PNW in a sad little Hyundai CUV, I finally got to drive the 1 again!
Needs a bath, and I haven't even opened 'er up since my return, but, I Love This Car!

While in Washington, I read Garth Stein's "The Art of Driving in the Rain." Great story. I laughed. I cried. I couldn't put it down. Actually started it on the plane, and left it halfway through to get to the hotel and live life for a day. Picked it back up at 10:30pm "I'll just finish that chapter, and read one more." 1AM - still up, done.

Anyway,
People have asked my what my license plate - BECOME1 - means.
I have an idea of it in my mind, but have had trouble putting it into words.
First, it's on a 1-Series (a fact lost to most people who ask - though, hopefully, not here.) But it's always been more than that. The way a BMW (or Porsche, or the occasional other vehicle) can become more than just an appliance - but you can be so in tune with it that your become one with the car, and the two as one become part of the journey.

Mr. Stein - or, at least, Denny's dog, Enzo - says it best.
To paraphrase, since I don't have the book in front of me, and am not set up to take my 'vert to the track:

"The car is an extension of the driver. The road is an extension the car. The rain is an extension of the road. The sky is an extension of the rain.
It is about believing that you are not you; you are everything. And everything is you."

That looks like a cool book. I am adding it to my reading list. There is another too.

Fried the FRM a couple days ago when boosting my battery. Just heard back from the dealership today and they will be covering the replacement under the BMW NA extended warranty on the part.

Any tips on not frying it again in the future? I will need to change my battery when I get my car back.

Thanks, good to know! When I say stock fuel system, I already have a stage 2 LPFP (have previously ran E60 without issue), but at this stage I'd like to keep my car on pump fuel (I do have access to E85 but it's a PITA for a daily driver, and while I'm not dead-against WMI, it is illegal where I live and from what I've heard it can be risky) - so, in the future I'd see myself with a full PI system like what you've just put in, but for now it's a lot of money, and unless I resign myself to mixing E85, I'll be limited by octane rather than fuel supply.

I completely understand the argument that it's not worth going ST if you're only targeting 450whp - which is what I'm told you should expect to be the limit on pump fuel - (I mean, I get 435whp 'today' running E60 with the OEM turbos), but it's more acceptance of the fact that I can't be arsed with E85 right now and 450whp (ST on pump) is much better than 380whp (OEM turbos on pump), but that after 6 months of 450whp I'll be chomping at the bit to take the next step up to 600.

Drove up to Melbourne to meet up with BAN_M2 for lunch and swap some garaged parts. Thanks Ban!

Got home & ordered some parts off FCPEuro - Oil change kit, Water pump & thermostat refresh kit, Power steering reservoir & flush kit. They have a 5% code on google right now. Total for all those parts with the fluids(!) (Liqui Molly, BMW coolant & CHF11s was about the same as the water pump & thermostat from the dealer.
