Very nice! Congrats. Some people fear change. 718 is a great car and definitely punches above its weight class.

Screw that lo mileage stuff. Bought it in Dec 14 with 2900 miles on it just turned 48k use it every day never with the radio on can't get over the sound of the PE. 70 years old and leaving to my grandson and plan on taking another 1 month cross country camping trip next year, took one with a 08, another with a 11 so I'm due for one. To me at my age you need to live for today. Next month off to the Tail of the Dragon with my son and his Harley and my buddy with his Cayman S

As I said before, not driving a great car like these is like not having sex with your significant other because you're worried you'll ruin them for the next person. I can get it if you're on a lease, but I enjoy driving so I don't worry so much about not putting miles on my car. I do make sure I keep it in top shape. All my service is done early. I replaced spark plugs and front brakes just a little while ago even though they weren't due.

I just saw an E46 M3 on Bring A Trailer with 176 miles on it. That must be the dumbest dude ever....what a waste of time to hold that poor car in a garage without using it. Goes against the whole point of ownership...

I do enjoy looking at my cars but enjoy driving them more. I also don’t plan on leaving any money behind for anyone after I die either lol.

Some collect things because they enjoy having them around and often have multiple examples, some they drive-track etc. Really have to come to the realization that money is not an obstacle for some collectors. Rarely is there any money to be made by holding on to a car as garage art and is done purely for personal enjoyment.

There are a lot of reasons why people do things that on the surface might not make a lot of sense. Perhaps the most important force in human behavior is inertia; doing nothing can be a default choice when the various other choices won't make very much difference, if taken. The sorts of cars that we discuss on this forum don't cost all that much money, we aren't talking about cars that cost 2 or 3 million dollars here.

An affluent person (notice I did not say "rich" person) might have several hundred thousand dollars lying around that are not invested, per se, although they could be called upon if needed on fairly short notice. If that money is sitting in a bank account, the depositor might get 1% in interest per year, if he is lucky. If instead a part of that money is tied up in a "fungible" & collectible car or two, what's the difference? The car can be converted into cash fairly easily, if the cash is needed. If the car is not depreciating or barely depreciating then the cost of ownership is trivial in the overall scheme of this person's finances. And the car is way more fun to own than the $40 or $50 or $60 thousand dollars in a bank account.

This isn't a matter of looking at the car(s) as an investment, but rather as an alternate store of value that will actually be fun to have around as long as it is owned.

Absolutely. Anyone who finances a collectible car, who isn't using it as primary household vehicle is an idiot.

Yes always pay cash or if borrowed be making more on said money somewhere else. I still get much pleasure reminiscing about past cars owned and cant think of any real regrets.

My 2000 Z3M coupe was a single owner car with around 58,000 miles on it when I bought it 3 years ago. The owner was a married lady whose husband had bought it for her as her birthday gift 15 years earlier. It came with an accordion case containing receipts from every oil change, service, brake pad change, battery change, etc. etc. etc. that it had ever had. I got a PPI at the local dealership, and a walk through with a mechanic while on the lift, and this guy was very familiar with this car and with E36s in general. He pointed out pitfalls (some of which I knew of) like the subframe floor which can come apart in these cars (not in mine).

Anyway, during the first 2 years I had to replace the clutch, certain parts in the manual shifter, and the entire window washer system which itself was almost a $1000 repair. Totaled I have spent at least $3500, closer to $4000 on this "perfect," single owner car.

Old BMWs are expensive to own, and you can pretty much expect that anyone selling one has stopped doing elective work on the car for the last year or two (or longer) of their ownership.
I generally agree with your position. Old cars will always need work, low or high miles. Though low miles cars usually need different work than high miles, they all will have age or miles related issues.

Just curious, do you do your own work, or have it done? That can dramatically effect the cost of repairs.

Let me quote my dad, who is a retired lawyer: "I have a deal with the car mechanics; they don't practice law, and I don't work on cars."

I do a lot of things myself around the house, but relatively little on my cars. I should probably do more!

Any car I have personally owned has always needed more work as the miles went up, rarely have I spent much of any thing until after roughly 80k miles. I do not red line or beat on them which is part of that. Do most of my own work on everything including my homes.

Not abusing your stuff eliminates a huge percentage of what can go wrong with it.

Do agree that the p four banger isn't the best exhaust note but that's not the whole picture.
Oddly enough, I'm generally a Porsche guy, but I only drive a 135i at the moment, and I get more compliments on the little BMW than I ever did my 911 or Cayman. Being a Porsche fanatic, those are still the classic cars that I read about and have interest in, for the most part, although, oddly enough, I always loved the BMW 2002, so I guess it makes sense that the 1er was my first BMW sports car.

I have to agree about the four banger sound. I was driving behind a gorgeous 718 Cayman in Miami blue the other day, and the sound wasn't pretty. It almost made me want to rev out my N55 a little bit to brag, but I'm not that kind of guy.

Ultimately, I think the 987/997 was peak water-cooled Porsche, with hydraulic steering and proper flat-sixes, so that's the direction I'll go if I ever get back into Porsche.

I don't have a 135is, but I think it's supposed to like this.
