2012 BMW 128i pairing error with iphone 7

I just bought a 2012 128i. I used to own the same year and model several years ago and had no issues pairing my older iphone via bluetooth, but this one is a mystery. I have gone through all the steps and keep getting an error message to try again. The iphone 7 recognizes the car, but won't give a passcode. I've tried cabling, as well as signing out of icloud, doing a reset on the phone as well as a restart of the phone. Nothing has worked yet. Anybody out there with similar issues, or a solution?
