Beware of water in the trunk
I recently took my 135 in to have the rear bumper painted due to a deep scratch. Apparently the body shop decided to wet sand the bumper in place and did so with either the trunk open or the tail lights removed. The end result was a generous amount of water being deposited in all lower wells in the trunk. About 2 inches.
For those who are unaware, there a lot of electronics back there. I knew this, but the body shop was clueless. Maybe I should have reviewed this with them. The damage was as follows. Dead battery Blown stereo amp Fried TCU Fried ECU Fried stereo head unit due to amp blowing it The computer needed to be totally reprogrammed. The car was in the BMW service center for 2 weeks being worked on. Most parts were not in stock and had to be ordered from Germany. Total bill was about $3,000. Lucky for me, the body shop paid for all damages. This could be a costly lesson for any 1 owner who happens to have a spilled gallon of any liquid on the way home from the grocery. Be careful. It will cost you. |

This has happened before to someone. I think they had groceries back there and a gallon of water spilled, frying everything.

Yep, and after remembering that post, I put my beer cooler in the back seat instead of the trunk last week. I can see this happening pretty frequently to people who aren't aware of the electronics under the floor. I feel like BMW should have done a little better job of protecting these, knowing that people haul things like coolers around back there. |

On the other hand I spilled a six pack worth of beer in my trunk and there was no problem other than the smell. However, the rubber trunk liner stopped some of the spill and I have limited options on my one, so I don't have quite as much electronic wizardry underneath as some 1 series.

I dont worry about this, since the only thing back there for me is the battery. (Euro/business radio)
