AWD conversion

Alright, pretty simple question. Is an all wheel drive conversion possible (135i)? I realize this would be pretty expensive, but the alternative for me is to buy another evo IX, or I suppose a 335ix but the latter is a good deal more expensive. So I guess I'm wondering if I could take pretty much every part I need from a 335 ix +a small bit of custom fabrication? Or would this be a totally custom job and hence completely unreasonable? I live deep in the mountains of Colorado and really need a good AWD car (not looking for other car suggestions as I know all of the choices I would be interested in, but this project has always held some interest for me). Any help is appreciated.

Wait, you came into here, looking for information on a AWD 1 series conversion, right? How many 1 series conversions have you seen here? And your mad becasue people are telling you they dont have the information you want????

This would be your indication of what kind of reliable, hands on technical information your going to get.

Best bet, go to your local Auto fabrication shop and ask them what it would take. Not an online forum for general enthusiasts.

I'm looking to see if 335 ix parts would fit on a 135i. But actually thank you I'm sure that will be the most useful advice that I get. This is why I never post on this forum because like you said its for general enthusiasts who only ask what exhaust is best and have probably never picked up a wrench/ have no actual car knowledge.

pioneer it - please do this. it would be awesome! I have never heard of anyone doing it, but some people have talked about it. I would imagine using Xi parts with some fab work would be possible. Im not saying it will be cheap or easy, but this is a great opportunity to do something truly different and contribute a lot of information to the forums.

I too think this would be epic. But extremely expensive. You would need SO many parts.. Trans, transfer case, driveshaft, front diff, oil pan, probably oil pump/pickup, front axles, front knuckles/bearings/shocks, front suspension geometry is completely different. If you found yourself a good rear-end wrecked 335xi donor car I can see this happening, but otherwise waaaaay too much money.

Do it!

Have fun trying to fit a central diff, as well as computer programming.

If you ever noticed in xDrive/xi cars...there is a significant difference in the floorboard around the transmission...because of the central diff.

Do lots Of research first thing find a car that has a similar foot print of the 1series so wheel base width ect.

I would start there see what can fit with little modification first.

This reminds me of the nissan juke witch they transplanted the heart and guts of the r35. It went from a 30k car to 250k don't quote me on numbers.

Ya this is more what I was looking for. I'm thinking as long as I could keep it below 15-20k it would be worth it, due to that being the price of a car I would get instead. Hopefully I'll be able to figure something out.

I dare you to try.

The hardware isn't even the "hard" part, with enough $ you can get the various parts to fit the chassis. But enjoy the wiring swaps involved.

The result would be pretty epic for drag racing (so far as BMWs are concerned), but the understeer would be pretty nasty IMO.

AWD would be cool in a 135i. There was mention of putting awd in the M235i.

What's your budget? Are you doing any of the work? Your easily spending 15k in parts alone I'm guessing it be at least 30k+ it be epic if you did this but there's so many unknowns. Good luck may the force be with you.

everyone also told me it would cost $20-30k to do a 1m conversion and that a S65 swap would run $30k.....

What's the labor like (time wise) for the wiring harness swap to an S65? Just curious, such a cool build you've done man

If OP wants to try by all means...but seriously, the space doesn't really work, and the electronic swap would be mind numbing.

What the s65 swap run you? I've only seen it done once and they didn't have the cost.
