Using Auto Climate control
So the temps are slowly dropping everyday and I decided to see if my heat works in the car. Auto climate control is turned off. So i turn both temps to 28C and hit the Auto button. How come the a/c light appears when I want heat instead? Does the a/c shut off after? Hot air does come but with the a/c light still on.

All cars I have had that have auto climate control do turn on the A/C. All you do is turn off the A/C by pushing the A/C button and the Auto still works when you want heat.
I believe it is to control humidity. It also helps to defog windows a lot faster too.

Yes, neteagle is right....AC is conditioned air which is in sense, dehumidified air. You can have hot or cold AC. AC is normally used to blow cold air because in the summer, humidity is higher compared with winter.
So, by setting it in auto mode, the AC light may come on even though you set the temp high, such as 28C. |

That is normal operation for BMWs. My past models have acted the same way. I just manually override, but it is very useful when dealing with fogged windows in the winter. I believe there is a brief discussion in the manual about this.

I have been told by an AC unit reconditioner, that AC lasts longer if it's used constantly as well, the coolant can settle and loose effectiveness if not used (?), but that's just what I heard.

I have also heard the same thing. I just like having better gas mileage when I don't really need the A/C.

The reason for that is that the refridgerant actually lubricates and conditions seals...if you don't use your AC, the seals will dry up and degrade and refridgerant will leak out...I never used the AC in my GTI and when I finally started using it again, it was toast
