Is this typical? Dirt in spark plug holes

So had 5 cylinders misfire. Decided to pull the coils and was excessive dirt in the tubes. Also, looked like some of the coils were shorted out because of brown "burns" where the white area is.

Of course I have some eldor coils on the way and NGK plugs.

Is this normal?

Did the car ever run without the engine cover and/or without the bottom cowl where the cabin air filter is located?

I've seen something similar when water pools on top of the engine and makes it's way into the coil tubes.
